History in Frankenstein
Mary Shelley was just 18 years old when she wrote Frankenstein. Frankenstein was written during Romanticism, the novel provides insight on the issues that arose during that time. When Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein when many historical things were going on, in which she put in her novel along with her opinion. In Frankenstein, science is a huge part of the novel. She uses the fact that Victor wants to gain knowledge along with the consequences of going too far. Without Victor using science, it would not be the horror novel that it is. The 1800’s was the start of scientific practice. Research, funding, journals also laboratories were all introduced at this time. Technology even greatly advanced around this time as well. Technology like the microscope contributed to new understandings of the body. At this time, hospitals provided opportunities to observe large numbers of patients. In this era, women had a certain role to follow during this time. Women’s suffrage movement, where they believe both men and women rights should be protected. In Frankenstein, all the female characters are portrayed as family caregivers. When Victor’s mother died, Elizabeth’s duty is to take care of the family. “…looked upon Elizabeth as mine-mine to protect, love and cherish” (Shelley, 44). We see Victor say that Elizabeth was his as if she was some sort of object. This is the way men looked at women, as some sort of object they considered as theirs. Justine has even been portrayed a type of way. She took care of William as if it was her own child, fulling the role of a woman in that era.
