John Baskerville was born in 1706 to John and Sara Baskerville in England. At the age of 17 years, he moved away from home to look for ways of educating himself. On the process, he had a chance to work with several companies enabling him to start his own business as a typographer and printer. Through his lifetime, he was able to publish several works. He had a complicated relationship with a married woman, Sarah Eaves, who was married to Richard Eaves. Later Richard died and they got married. Baskerville John died in 1775 and was burried standing following his request.

The book began with Paul Revere’s America. Paul Revere’s real name was Apollos Riviore. Paul Reveres name was later changed because of it being too hard to pronounce. He was born on the small island of Guernsey in the English channels but at age 12, he sailed to Boston on November 15, 1715. By 1722, he was a goldsmith in Boston. In 1729, Paul Revere married a named Deborah Hitchborn. He worked as an artisan and a silversmith. During this time, he was known to have amazing skills in both jobs. One of Paul Revere’s best designs was his print of the Boston Massacre in 1770. It helped to create an image of British tyranny and American virtue that still shapes memory of the massacre.

By being educated at a young age in literacy, I included it in my pottery and also working for newspaper companies strengthened my form of expression. Working in the South Carolina Republican and then later on The Edgefield Hive as a typesetter, it was a good experience helping my literacy skills but I didn’t feel fully indulged. I did it because I had to but also to learn. By understand typography, I was able to understand the science of the anatomy of type. They taught me the use of size, spacing, and placement of typography in order to show hierarchy, direction and attraction. I became to understanding that type is a collective of shapes and strokes. John Winthrop was born in Edwardstone, Suffolk, England, on January 22, 1588, and died in Boston, Massachusetts on March 26, 1649. He was the only child of Adam Winthrop and his wife, Anne Brown. Winthrop briefly attended Trinity College in Cambridge, studied law at Gray's Inn, and in the 1620s became an attorney at the Court of Wards in London. John Winthrop was a man who held Christianity to be above all churches.
Samuel Adams was born on September 27, 1722 in Boston, Massachusetts. He died October 2, 1803 of Parkinsons disease. His father’s name was also Samuel along with his son. He had 12 other siblings in his family. His son served as a doctor during the Independence. His daughter, Hannah, wasn’t spoken of much. Years later, Samuel Adams 2nd cousin, John Adams, became president of the United States in 1797! He was born into a rich heritage of family where they could just about pay for anything he needed to be successful in life. He ranked 5 out of 22 students in his graduating year of Harvard College for becoming a politician. He received his Masters degree at a top notch school and had a lot of opportunities. Although Ben was a very good writer, his brother never published any of his works. To work around this problem, Ben took on the character of “Mrs. Silence Dogood”. “Her” 14 letters, which were witty and imaginative, were published into Ben’s newspaper, The New England Courant. When James found out what his brother was doing, he became extremely angry at Ben. Following this issue, Ben promptly abandoned his apprenticeship and escaped to New York and eventually settled in Philadelphia, where he lived for the remainder of his life. This man, John Hancock, is one of those extraordinary men that stand out.John’s life began on January 16, 1736 in Braintree, Massachuchetts.John was the middle child of three. He was the son of (Rev.) John Hancock, born on June 1, 1702 in Lexington, Massachuchetts and son of Mary Hawke, born on October 13, 1711 in Hingham, Massachuchetts. Mary was once married before she married John Hancock Sr. Her previous marriage ended in her former husband’s death.(Rev.) John Hancock was well-liked by his parish, was paid well, and was provided a very comfortable home. In return of their generosity, he was a "faithful shepard." He kept an attentive watch over the morals and religious well-being of all members of the parish.
John Adams was born on October 30th, 1735 to John Adams Sr. and Susanna Boylston Adams. He was the oldest of three and lived in Braintree, Massachusetts. His father was a farmer, deacon, and town councilman. The Adams were not very wealthy and John Adams’ father knew he could only send one son and he wanted to send his eldest. However, John Adams told his father “I do not love books and I wish you would lay aside thoughts of sending me to college.” His father in reply asked him- “What would you do child? Be a farmer?” John insisted that he wanted to be a farmer and not a scholar. His father brought him to work the fields the next day. Farming was strenuous work and was most likely rough on John’s hands and back. The night after the long day of farming, His father questioned him “Well John are you satisfied with being a farmer.” John Adams refused to admit that his father was right but John Adams Sr said “I do not like it[farming] so well, so you shall go to school.” John Adams and his father found a compromise- John would go to a tutor that challenged his students instead of the town teacher that was unbearably easy. Adams excelled under the tutors teaching and was accepted to Harvard in 1751.

Samuel Johnson, prominent English author, lived a life which was appears to have been unpretentious on the surface, however his life was filled with numerous complications, extreme suffering and massive psychological troubles. Also, despite all the struggles and suffering in his life, he had a “passionate concern for humanity and even said, ‘I have often thought that there has rarely passed a life of which a judicious and faithful narrative would not be useful’” ( Green ). Samuel Johnson was born September 7, 1709 in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England in the home above his fifty-two year old father’s struggling bookshop. His father had gained prosperity but it did not endure the enterprises he was involved in, forcing the family into financial distress. As a result, Samuel Johnson would feel the financial distress for the first fifty years of his life. Sarah Ford, his mother, was forty years old when he was born. She was from a respectable family but married a poor man of intellectual tastes (Green). His parents did not share a happy marriage and rarely conversed. After his father’s death he developed an appreciation of his mother’s character and determination; she would operate the bookshop for almost thirty years. On the other hand, she was firm, narrow minded and self-centered which made her unable to fill the emotional needs of her children (Green). It is speculated that Johnson’s younger brother may have committed suicide at the age of twenty-five and Johnson’s life would be plagued with psychological issues which were directly related to his mother (Green).
The eighteenth century saw unprecedented growth of literature and the arts in Europe and America. Britain during this time period also enjoyed prolonged periods of civil peace that stood in sharp contrast to the bloody and protracted civil and international conflicts that lasted throughout the 17th century. Furthermore, as the rising middle classes increasingly sought both education and leisure entertainment, the marketplace for artistic production swelled dramatically. One of the most critical elements of the 18th century was the increasing availability of printed material, both for readers and authors. The period was markedly more generally educated than the centuries before. Education was less confined to the upper classes than it had been in centuries, and consequently contributions to science, philosophy, economics, and literature came from all parts of the newly United Kingdom. It was the first time when literacy and a library were all that stood between a person and education.
Robert Hooke was born on July 18th, 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England. His father, John Hooke, was a clergyman. As a child Hooke became ill of smallpox, of which he survived from, only to be disfigured and scarred. Throughout his childhood, Robert never really received much of any regular schooling due to his sickness and weakness. On the other hand he had an amazing natural curiosity, which led to the development of his mind through self-learning. When Robert was merely thirteen years old his father committed suicide by hanging himself. All that was left behind for Robert was 40 pounds. After his father died, Hooke was sent to London as an orphan, where he studied under Peter Lely, an artist of the time. He soon realized that he should spend his inheritance attending Westminster School, where he lodged with Dr. Richard Rusby. Robert had a large interest in mechanical objects and was encouraged greatly by Dr. Busby. Within the first week of being with Dr. Busby, Hooke was able to work through many books of Euclid's geometry. He was soon allowed unsupervised access to Dr. Busby's library. When Robert was eighteen he moved on and attended Oxford, where he soon after obtained his masters degree. Once he secured the sponsorship and guidance of John Wilkins, the warden of Wadham College, he was well on his way to become one of the greatest inventors, microscopists, physicists, surveyors, astronomers, biologists, artists.
