Hip Hop Culture: Popular Trends for Teenagers during the 21st Century Hip hop music consist of a DJ mixing rhythmic passages of albums on a turntable while a rapper raps over the beats. Hip hop is a culture by itself, equipped with its own language, lyrical style, visual art, dance moves and look. Fashion and music has a relationship based on a person's musical style. The Grateful Dead and the hippies in the 60s, disco in the 70s and Madonna in the 80s are all examples of creative relationships in the past. Hip hop culture has a major effect on teenage trends in the 21st century. Teenage fashion has been influenced by hip hop in numerous ways. Rappers and R&B artist dress head to toe in designer name brands that support the hip hop style. Clothing lines such as Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo by Ralph Lauren and Sean John are all designers associated with today's generation. "And others couldn't figga, How me and Hilfigga, Used to move with vigga." In the lyrics from A Tribe Called Quest, rapper Q- tip praises his clothing in his music. Being a role- model for the youth in the 21st century he also promotes his style to fans and admirers. Therefore, teenagers wear baggy pants worn around the hip to expose underwear, oversized athletic jerseys, and hooded sweatshirts. This look is a popular trend in the fashion world. Hip hop artists influence fashion accessories as well. Jewelry known as "Bling," is a sign of power and respect. Gold, silver, Fetter 2 platinum and diamonds are hot in the hip hop world. The Hip hop look is diverse, and evolves over time, as it was adopted by white and African American youth, although hip hop is a musical out growth of urban African - American culture.
