Hillsdale College a nonsectarian Christian institution, teaches the learning of societal morals through the liberal arts program as a means to perpetuate the civil and religious liberties that God has given to the United States of America. The backbone of the precepts held by our founding fathers can primarily be traced to Athens and Jerusalem. The moral precepts of our founding fathers were primarily rooted in Judeo-Christian beliefs found in the Bible. These moral precepts find their manifestation in the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments reveal the depravity of the human heart, with this in mind, the founding fathers looked to create a system of checks and balances to counteract this propensity to evil. That specific legacy is that every generation has to know and pass on the moral integrity and framework of God’s kingdom and values on this earth by knowing and teaching the liberal arts. This legacy is central to every aspect of Hillsdale college. If one doesn’t cultivate or train the next generation, the ideas that compose the very framework of this nation will erode and disintegrate into the trash heap of history. This mission that God has given to Hillsdale is essential to creating and preparing leaders for the America of tomorrow. A recent example of this was Elizabeth Warren’s actions in the Senate during the appointment of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General of the United States. Rather than engaging in a healthy constructive debate that included legitimate issues, Elizabeth Warren proceeded using ad hominem attacks on Jeff Sessions which is a serious threat to our dual partisan system. The good of society came from the sacrifice of self-interest, which was an influence from classic republicanism. Jefferson believed that the people in society are naturally social and political. Social ethics in American society called for the restraining and punishment of violence and theft. Issues in societies in America also used Classical Republicanism by Thomas Jefferson through moral choice with the knowledge of good and evil. Classical Republicanism showed citizens as the best preservers of individual natural rights.

When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.

In Bell Hooks’s essay, "Keeping Close to Home," she suggests that the American educational system forces students to hide, change, or mask the values that they have when they first enter college. While this might be true for some students, this line of thinking does not hold true for me personally. I do not agree with her assertion for, and I have not changed since entering the University of Georgia. The University of Georgia has not placed any pressure on me to change my values due to the fact that I had very strong values when I entered the University, and those same values hold true to me today.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
