Hills Like White Elephants; The Love of my Life; The Day it Happened In the short stories, “Hills Like White Elephants,” “The Love of my Life,” and “The day it Happened,” are all quite different stories from each other. However, despite their difference, they share a common theme of dependence on their significant other and how some characters evolve throughout the progression of the story, while others don’t. Each story involves the main characters struggling to overcome their own internal demons, while at the same time trying to please their significant others. Each in their own way are dealing with common problems that one might face in life, such as having a child and all the comes with it. To explain, being dependent means to reply on someone. While in contrast, being independent means you reply on yourself. With that understood, the main characters are dependent on their significant other. This is important because it shows that the main characters reply on another individual for whatever support they need. Show in, “Hills Like White Elephants,” written by Ernest Hemingway, Jig, the main character, is shown to be dependent on her boyfriend. Jig is a character that comes off as someone who isn’t assertive appears incapable of making decisions for herself. Mentioned in the story, “‘What does it say?’ ‘Anis del Toro. It’s a drink.’” Though the conversation may appear simple, it actually shows that Jig doesn’t understand spanish. This is important because they are in a spanish speaking country, which means, Jig relies on her boyfriend to help her understand what is happening around
