Social class refers to the different groups of people who have different economic position in the society where they are classified based on their income, wealth, education, job and social connections. Using the functionalist theory, people of different social class would tend to maintain status quo and work together to help in the growth of the economy. The society is unequally structured because people in the higher social class have a more important part to play in the growth of the economy and people in the lower social class have smaller impact on the economy. Previously, sports such as golf was only accessible to the higher social class due to the cost of the equipment and the cost of club membership. Now playing sports such as golf is accessible to everyone where there are golf course in country club which is available for everyone. An example is golfing is available in Jurong country club. Democratization, egalitarianism and meritocracy can be found in boxing. Boxing is a sport that is open to people from different social class and everyone is treated equally and given the same opportunities in boxing. Meritocracy in sport is achieving based on their abilities. Manny Pacquiao was born in Kibawe, Bukidnon in Southern Philippines. Manny Pacquiao grew up in a poor family, where he often only have warm water for dinner. Manny Pacquiao did not finish his high school due to poverty and fight for a living. Each match he won was 100 pesos or less than $4. At the age of 14 he left his home to become a boxer. Manny Pacquiao trained seriously and enter his first professional fight against Edmund Ignacio whereby he won and it was the stepping stone to his success in the boxing career.
