Personal Statement

When I reflect back on my decision to enroll into the School of Education at City College, I’ve come to realize that I made the best decision that I could have possibly made. The decision to take the next steps forward to hit my educational and career goals has been challenging and rewarding. In the Secondary Education program for Spanish 7-12 certification, I’ve found confirmation in my ability to be inspiring, motivating, and a positive influence to help mold and shape the minds of youth in today’s NYC high schools. I chose to become a high school teacher because I’m determined to make difference and a positive change in someone’s life. I’m often asked: “where did this passion to help students come from?” To answer the question, the passion I have to help youth stems from two teachers who never gave up on me as a young student. I thoroughly enjoyed how they loved their jobs and their students. Their passion came from within and it was noticeable. Till this very day, I reflect back on how one of my high school Spanish teachers was a motivator and was the perfect role model to bring out the best in her students. The second teacher who influenced me was my grandmother. Although, I never studied under my grandmother, I was fortunate enough to see her in action as I grew up. She has been an educator for as long as I’ve been alive and for 40 plus years, she’s always been student-facing and has thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. She’s enjoyed it so much that she has yet to retire. This is the type of career that I seek to obtain, and teaching is where I will find this passion. This was a skill that I always wished to have in a career where I can be effective and authentic. For this, I am forever grateful. I am grateful to have two positive influences who have steered me in the right direction through my journey with City College. Thus, I am taking a bold step (and a leap of faith) by changing careers in order to become a teacher that has the ability change the world. I believe that all students have the ability to learn, but students have to be given the necessary tools to which they can use and increase
