School start times need to be pushed back because of student’s physiological need for sleep. Most student, teachers, and parents are aware of how most adolescents are in the morning: slow, groggy, and unresponsive. It always seems as though first hour class periods drag on the longest and it where student’s can be found with the largest eye bags, darkest under circles, and heaviest eyelids. Not only do they look tired, but they feel tired inside and this inward lull affects their outward appearance and interaction with fellow classmates. Most people are cranky in the morning, and there is no exception for students. The fact that over half of these students have such a difficult time socialising in the morning is proof of how big of an issue the start time of school is in the education system. Not only are students more stressed, but they also experience other mood swings due to the lack of sleep that school start times create during the school week. National Public Radio aired a talk with Michelle Trudeau where she spoke on the problems of sleep in the education system. She makes it a point to discuss how having to wake up so early has a direct link to traces of depression in students in most areas of their lifestyle all across the nation ("High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens"). This negative demeanour was not only seen by teachers in classrooms at school, but also by the parents of the student. Parents experience this moodiness at home not only after school but on the weekend as a majority of the Saturday and Sunday is spent sleeping in to make up for the student’s lack of sleep. The depression continues, specifically in females, and males lack sleep and are more irritable. While this is not the case for all student, Wolfson and Carskadon study showed this to be a trend. Another article was written by Amy R. Wolfson and Mary A. Carskadon for the same child development journal entitled “A Survey of Factors Influencing High School Start Times.” For this study, Wolfson and Carskadon studied 345 different schools across the United States and discovered a multitude of insightful things. In their research they report that “Less total sleep time was associated with daytime fatigue, inability to concentrate in school, and a tendency to doze off in class. Persistent sleep problems have also been associated with learning difficulties throughout the school years (A Survey of Factors Influencing High School Start Times).” This quotation is a perfect summary of why students need more sleep.
