High School Jacket Narrative

I threw my books on the bed and approached the jacket slowly as if it were a large object, larger than I was, and it’s gravity was pulling me towards it. I studied it carefully It wasn’t the exact type I wanted, but it was nice. Much nicer than I thought my family could afford. It was a black basketball hoodie, with blue camouflage on the hood and arms. It had an extra layer on the inside, so it had to be warm. I put it on. Soon, I was almost overheating. I flapped the jacket’s arms like birds wings. I looked in the mirror, combing my hair, checking to see if it was just as cool on me as it was off. I ran outside giving lots of gratitude to my mother, thank you very much.

At school the next day, I scored an easy four on a math test, and got a congratulations from my teacher. At recess, the playground terrorist, Frankie T., walked up to pick on me, but immediately ran away and cowered behind his two hulking friends, Jeff and Michael. They say that they’re made of muscle, but they seem more like walruses with all that fat. My best friend, Steve Negrete, looked at me over the top of his apple, his eyes filled with jealousy.
The girls turned away to whisper on the monkey bars, and immediately started giggling, like I was a celebrity that they couldn’t believe that they were about to meet. Some of the kids who couldn’t afford thick jackets jaws hit the floor, their teeth no longer shivering like a cup of crooked dice, as they were too far apart to clack together. The teachers had no need to worry about Frankie T. bullying me, as I was doing fine in my new jacket. A few minutes later, the fire bell rang. We paraded out into the yard, where we, the sixth graders, walked past all the other grades to stand against the back fence. Everybody saw me. Suddenly, everything got quiet.
