Dropping out is a personal decision, but many students feel like it's the best option if they have personal or academic issues. Research says, ¨More than 27 percent say that they leave school because they are failing too many classes. About 26 percent of students say that they dropped out to become caregivers to family members in need, and more than 20 percent say that school simply wasn't relevant to their lives,¨ (Learning Liftoff 2). You can legally drop out of high school at age 17 in SC, and you can’t join the military until you are age 17. High school dropouts should not be required to join the military because they may have to drop out for family or personal reasons, or just because they are failing too many classes. According to the National Dropout Prevention Center, dropping out of school is a persistent problem that causes much interference within our current educational systems efficiency(Why students drop out 1). These categories are: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3(Education Credentials 1). Tier 1 military applicants should have a high school diploma, not a GED. Tier 2 applicants should have a GED, home study diplomas, alternative high school diplomas and occupational program certificates. Tier 2 applicants are a limited number allowed to enlist per year. Tier 3 applicants are almost non-existent in the 21st century armed services. They should be neither a high school graduate or an alternative school attendee. These type of applicants are almost never accepted for enlistment. A high school dropout should not feel that they are any less than anyone else that wants to join the military. One should feel that it is a privilege to be a member of the US military, not a requirement.
