In the last ten years many young and talented high school basketball players have chosen to enter the NBA draft. These 17 and 18 year olds decide to skip college, and instead they choose to take a big risk and enter the NBA, hoping to become stars and earn millions of dollars. In many cases, these youngsters’ careers are a failure because they don’t turn out as talented as they thought to be. They end up spending only a few seasons in the NBA because they are not good enough to compete at that level. Many of them have to move on to doing other things, such as playing basketball overseas, doing everyday jobs, or going back to college to earn a degree.
This essay will help you understand why making the jump from high school to the NBA is not good in most cases, and it will show you the benefits, for these kids, of going to college.
The Success Rate
Reggie Harding was the first high school player to make the jump from high school to the NBA, and he did this in 1963. He spent five mediocre seasons in the NBA and was never the special player that people thought he would have been. Since then, there have been around 40 high school players who have decided to skip college and declare for the NBA draft. The bulk of these players have come within the last seven to ten years. Out of these forty or so players, no more than ten have had a successful career. Last year seven high school players entered the NBA draft, and only one of those seven had a successful first season, and that was Lebron James (Smith).

Your dreams of being someone may not turn out the way you think they will. The documentary Hoop Dreams is a story about two boys from the ghetto that want to play in the NBA. Arthur ¨Man”Agee goes to Marshalls and William Gates goes to St. Joseph’s which are both situated in Illinois, where their dreams of becoming a pro basketball player vanished. Both of the boys face obstacles that are outside of themselves. Arthur´s family struggled with money, education, and pressure from others hurts him. Also, William struggled with balancing his family with basketball, the pressure from others, and education.
Langston Hughes wrote during a very critical time in American History, the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes wrote many poems, but most of his most captivating works centered around women and power that they hold. They also targeted light and darkness and strength. The Negro Speaks of Rivers and Mother to Son, both explain the importance of the woman, light and darkness and strength in the African-American community. They both go about it in different ways.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, specifically developed for borderline personality disorder (BPD), in which the clinician attempts to motivate the client towards change in behavior while simultaneously validating existing thoughts and feelings. Ever since entering the field of Social Work, I have been exposed to many disorders, therapies, frameworks, and strategies in my studies. My worldview for much of my life had been that I would never need to use any of the treatments or skills, because I was not “broken”, or “too underprivileged” to have gained the education to “know better”. But, as I progressed through my education, I have come to realize that everybody is constantly learning and using acquired skills to function better in everyday life. For myself, I found the skills within Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) treatment to best addressed the areas I was lacking.
Some of the most common actions or responses for individuals with borderline personality disorder are suicidal. Incorporating the teaching of problem-solving skills will hopefully, again, reduce the number of suicidal thoughts or behaviors an individual has that could result in serious self-injury (Van Goethem, A., et al.). Lastly, arguably the most important component of the dialectical behavior therapy is allowing those who have undergone the treatment to test what they have learned. The final stage of this therapy involves having the patients visualize themselves in certain scenarios and creating a response to what they are envisioning. The most important part of this process is having patients trust their responses without utilizing the help and opinions of other individuals (Van Goethem, A., et al.). Though there are several different components that make up the dialectical behavioral therapy, they are each crucial to the treatment for individuals with, not only borderline personality disorder, but many other psychological disorders as well. The wild attitudes of these clients can also make it difficult for therapists to establish productive working relationships. Over the past two decades, theorists have begun to use a treatment called dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). It has gained growing research and support and now considered the treatment of choice. DBT includes behavioral and cognitive techniques that are applied to other disorders reinforcing appropriate behaviors and social skills. Finally, antianxiety, antipsychotic, antidepressants and mood stabilizers have helped calm the emotional and aggressive actions of some people with borderline personality disorder. Many clinicians believe that a combination of psychotropic drug treatment and psychotherapy is more successful than with therapy or drugs alone.
The four poems by Langston Hughes, “Negro,” “Harlem,” “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” and “Theme for English B” are all powerful poems and moving poems! Taken all together they speak to the very founding of relations of whites and blacks all the way down through history. The speaker in the poem the, “Negro” and also, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” tells the tale of freedom and enslavement that his people have endured, and it heralds their wisdom and strength. The poems “Harlem” and “Theme for English B” speaks to the continuous unfair treatment that the blacks have received at the hands of white people throughout the years.
During the year of 1978 Michael Jordan was set out to try and make his high school basketball team in which he was only 5’10” and could not dunk a basketball. (Newsweek). The one and only Michael Jordan was cut from his own high school team, granted he was trying out for Varsity and not Junior Varsity, this still infuriated Jordan. According to Newsweek Jordan said it was “embarrassing not making the team… [and] he went home locked himself in his room and cried (Newsweek).” This small setback seemed to only motivate Jordan as the article also states Jordan become Laney High’s best player.

It was not until the year 2002 that the NBA was able to find someone to match Jordan’s dazzling acrobatic style of play. His name is Lebron James. Lebron, who plays shooting guard and small forward, stands at an athletic six-eight. James, however, never played in the NCAA. He was drafted straight out of high school in the 2003-04 season, by the Cleveland Cavaliers. James is already on the road to success by achieving co-rookie of the year, and he appeared in the Olympics. All of the family members were present for the sixth meeting including Janice, Leon, Beatrice, Kat, and Guy. The family was introduced to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT was defined to the family and each family member was encouraged to practice using DBT skills in their daily lives. In addition the family was made aware of the benefits of using DBT. The family was in agreeance that the individual goals of Kat would be the focus of the session.
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football.
