When heroes are mention a stereotypical figure comes to mind, however in other pieces of literature heroism is showed more realistically. In the novel ¨The Outsiders¨ by S.E. Hinton, The characters Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny play major roles. The Outsiders is a story about conflict in between the two social groups at the time, the greasers and socs. In the novel the character Dally became the hero of the story because he provided Johnny and Ponyboy with a gun and money, lead cops off Johnny´s trail, and helped during the fire by saving Pony.
Dally helps by giving Johnny and Pony a gun and money for their escape trip. Hinton confirms this when Ponyboy and Johnny are asking Dally for help to get away from the cops and hide out. ¨He handed us

Different tasks and encounters with a variety of villains all lead the hero to the prize, to a new life (Seger). This person deemed the hero is as ordinary as the next but what makes them different is the drastic test that they must face. According to Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This shows how just normal people can be qualified as heros. A book that exemplifies this is To Kill A Mockingbird because it is filled with people that went out of their way to help others or the society as a whole. A person who did this in particular was Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch was a hero because he fell under the definition and was admired for his courage, achievements, and noble qualities.
The Outsiders by SE Hinton is a great coming-of-age novel that is about gangs, violent but also at the same time about love and brother ship. In the book, the society suddenly thinks the greasers, Pony, Johnny and Dally, are heroes. That really got me thinking. What is a hero?
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.

Yes, a hero is someone that stands up and tries to protect others from being harmed. In the book, The Outsiders, the Greasers proved to be the heroes of the story. It shows that no matter what your background is, you could always turn into a hero. They also showed that no matter how poor you are, you can still be a hero.The Greasers that I think showed bravery and fearlessness were: Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally.
In one scene, Dally is a hero because he saves Ponyboy’s life, he tries to get the fire out on Ponyboy’s jacket. According to the text, ””Dallas hit me. How come?” “Because your back was in flames, that’s why.” I was surprised. “It was? Golly, I didn't feel it. It doesn’t hurt.” We put it out before you got burned. That jacket saved you from a bad burning, maybe saved your life. You just keeled over from smoke inhalation and a little shock- of course that slap on the back didn’t help much”” (Hinton 94). The author’s main point is that Dally saves Ponyboy’s life. Not only did he try to put the fire out, but Dally gave Ponyboy the jacket that saves Ponyboy from a bad burn. Ponyboy could’ve got more injured if it wasn’t for Dally. Another example when Dally is a hero is when he gave a gun, money, and a way out to Johnny and Ponyboy, he asks no questions. When he knew if the police or Darry caught him, he would get in so much trouble. Hinton states, ““Darry would beat him to death for giving us the money and the gun and getting us out of town...Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville,” Dally instructed. “There’s an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. there’s a pump in the back so don’t worry about water. Buy a week’s supply of food as soon as you get there- this morning, before the story gets out, and then don’t so much as stick

For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Another example of a hero is Beowulf. Beowulf was created around 1000 AD and was known far and wide throughout the lands for his selflessness,bravery, and courage .

The book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, follows a horrific part of the life of a boy named Ponyboy Curtis. He is what you might call a Greaser, and has had a rough go at it in his life compared to others. It is difficult, but Ponyboy somehow manages to be himself and has the tenacity to stick through it all. He is in a gang with his friends and family and they are loyal to one another no matter what. A rival gang from the Socs crowd, a richer, more refined group, send him and his pals into a whirlwind of trouble and hurt. This book shows on multiple occasions that perseverance is necessary to get through life .
There is a hero in us all. A hero is someone who risks their own life to save or do good for others. Ponyboy is a hero because he risked his life to save children from a burning church. Johnny is a hero even though he killed someone it was to save his friend’s life but he also saved children from a burning church. Dally has been arrested, picks fights, and drinks, but when it comes to the people he is close with he has his soft spots for them. All bad boys have a good side.
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.

Though Beowulf’s heroism can be argued, Beowulf proves to be more self-gratuitous than genuine.
