History comes from the Greek word historia, meaning "inquiry, investigation” and it later came to specifically mean “investigation of the past”. It is a field of study which uses a story to scrutinize and evaluate a chain of events in order to objectively determine patterns of cause and effect of past events. All events that are remembered & safeguarded in some way or the other form part of a historical record.

A “historian” is a person who becomes an expert in the field of history by finding, collecting, organizing and submitting information, usually in writing, about past events. He wanted to record the great accomplishments of the Greeks and the Barbarians. Herodotus wanted to answer a number of questions such as, how did the war between the Greeks and Barbarians happen? And, what were the causes and explanations for it? In searching for these answers, he gathered a great deal of firsthand information – “by autopsy and by listening to what people had to say”. He compiled his works systematically, testing their accuracy and arranged them in a dramatic narrative. Herodotus’ story begins in the town of Halicarnassus where he lived until his family was exiled. Upon their banishment, he began to gather information to answer his questions. He travelled widely around the world of the east Mediterranean to gather information. After some time he compared answers and took into account the details to produce an accurate portrayal of the events that took place. Herodotus tells the stories from all perspectives and attempts not to show a biased opinion. The main purpose of his writings was to give an account of different events which took place during this time. Herodotus’ writings were historically significant because for the most part they are accurate. Herodotus is considered the first historian or the father of history.
