Quality of life can vary from person to person and different factors can impact the quality of health such as an illness. A medical condition may impact a person and/or their family’s life moderately or severely. Thus, in some situations may involve case management to help organize the support and services that is necessary for the patient and/or their family. In the case of Henry, he was diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis in which it impacted various aspects of his and his family’s life. Hepatitis C is an infection that can be transmitted through blood and cirrhosis is the final stage of hepatitis C in which the liver is not functional. As a result, there are limited options for Henry because of the severity of his illness; thus, a case manager may be needed to help identify the comprehensive needs and organize the resources for Henry and his family, so they can receive the appropriate care. Families must learn to cope together and to work out the best options for the patient and the rest of the family. Although it may not be fair at times, things may need to be centered on or around the patient no matter what the circumstance. (Abbott, 2003) Sacrifices may have to be made during difficult times. Many factors are involved when dealing with chronic illnesses. Coping with chronic illnesses alter many different emotions for the patients and the loved ones. Many changes occur that are very different and difficult to get used to. (Abbott, 2003) It is not easy for someone to sympathize with you when they haven’t been in the situation themselves. Mrs. Farrington was constantly worrying about allowing him out of the house or be with other kids. The hospital constantly kept correcting this behavior by stating that she needs to allow him to be like other kids but sometimes it was her first instinct to prevent hospitalization. Mainly Cody is hospitalized due to weight loss or to clean mucus out of his lungs completely. Unlike Mrs. Farrington who has to deal with the medical treatments daily, her husband is in more denial. When Cody becomes sick he understands to call the hospital but Mr. Farrington has no understanding of Cody’s medicine and such. Though studies have shown that children who are cared by their mother recover faster and are discharged earlier, Mr. Farrington behavior is very concerning (Family-Centered Care and the Pediatrician’s Role, 692). In this 21st century, there are more and more policies and guidelines that focused on long term conditions as these conditions are incurable but only can be controlled and progressed with long term management. In Northern Ireland, a policy framework “Living with Long Term Conditions” had been introduced and addressed about long term conditions (LTC) that needs high quality of care. This policy provides a better outcome with supporting good practice through 6 key development areas. The 6 key principles are essential in helping people with LTC to receive a better care, treatment and support. First area is partnership between the service user and the collaboration team whereby communication skill is highlighted to encourage service users to play an active role in managing their own conditions with individual care plan. Next, self-management is also another key principle to be developed so that those people with LTC managed their condition effectively which may progress over time. Through training and education on acquired skills is a good start to promote self-management strategy as they able to deal with flare-ups, condition and lifestyle. Thus, information is vital in helping them understand their own condition and knowing what is the best for them in order to increase their quality of life. A medicines management service help in bringing the best outcome for LTC patients while carer also need to maintain their own health to continue their caring role and act as a safeguarding through the provision of the support. The uncertain nature of chronic illness takes many forms, but all are long-term and cannot be cured. The nature of chronic illness raises hesitation. It can disturb anyone, irrespective of demographics or traditions. It fluctuates lives and generates various inquiries for the patient. Chronic illness few clear features involve: long-lasting; can be managed but not cured; impacts quality of life; and contribute to stress. Chronic illnesses can be enigmatic. My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift. I had also learned that client’s mental health illness had a huge impact on their current medical illness.
Parson’s sick role generalizes today’s modern-day view of the sick role. It is the role given to those who experience illness beyond the physical condition of a sick state- it constitutes a social role because behaviors are shaped by institutional expectations and reinforced by the norms of society. It's based on the assumption that being sick is not deliberate or a choice of that person. According to Parsons, the sick role requires an ill person to fulfil a series of obligations to gain many rights. They are obliged to: Seek medical advice, cooperate with medical experts and therapists throughout their illness, want to get well as quickly as possible (Cockerham, 2016). In return for fulfilling these obligations they are exempt from social responsibilities and self-care, which are taken upon by family and friends. These rights, however, are granted only when a recognized medical authority, such as a doctor, acknowledges the person’s illness. Some illnesses do not justify people claiming all the rights of the sick role. For example, minor ailments may be self-treated and should not require time off work. In such circumstances, an inappropriate adoption of the sick role puts a strain on this social contract and may be met with a lack of sympathy from family and careers.
