Henry's Disillusionment

World War One entailed numerous changes in soldiers and commoners’ lives. As we follow Lt. Henry's life throughout the war, his persona and priorities change. Whether it was his relationship with Catherine, his feelings towards the war, or the friendships he maintained, they all change over the course of the war. By the end of the novel the Lt. Henry we meet is not the same as the Lt. Henry we met at the beginning of the novel. When Lt. Henry first meets Catherine Barkley he thinks of her as “very beautiful” (Hemingway 18). In the beginning of their relationship Lt. Henry was not looking for a serious commitment. He is a youthful young man who is at first excited for the war, but as time goes on the disillusionment dawns on him. To be disillusioned is, to have the feeling of disappointment when the discovery of something is not as good as it seems. The article, Frederic Henry’s Disillusionment with War, provide good points on how Lt.Henry's feeling towards the war develops. It states how “his main fault seems to his general unawareness… Frederic Henry is somewhat like a fraternity boy, a party boy who has been motivated by an ill-defined idealism and a vague romantic urge to join the Peace Corps, only to find he is not the star of the show.” (Benson 84). As the war goes on he becomes more aware of the true actions that take place. After escaping the carabinieri when Lt. Henry changes he says ‘In civilian clothes I felt a masquerader.”(Hemingway 243). He had been in his uniform for such a long time he felt as though civilian clothes were a disguise. War is often romanticized, mostly to persuade people to be interested in serving.
