In Cumberland County alone, “13.4% of the county’s citizens live below the poverty line” (Family Promise PPT). As of 2013, there is an estimated population of 157,332 people living in Cumberland County (http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/34/34011.html). This means there are roughly 21,082 people living in poverty in the county. Several local organizations have been created to help combat this social issue, such as Spirit & Truth Ministries and Help & Hope. Although both organizations fight for a worthy cause, Spirit & Truth Ministries is a more effective program than Help & Hope because it can assist people more frequently, serve more people, and offer clients a variety of services.
Availability to provide assistance is essential when dealing with such a large population in need. Spirit & Truth Ministries operates Monday through Friday all year round (S&TM Pamphlet). Help & Hope operates Tuesday through Thursday each week (H&H Handout). Although a two-day difference appears insignificant at first glance, it can equate to a 104-day gap of availability to assist those who may depend on it. Additionally, each client can only collect food once a month with Help and & Hope (H&H). As stated in Help & Hope’s handout, “[a] major problem is having enough food to last through the whole month” (H&H Handout). With Spirit & Truth Ministries’ Soup

This means they would have to turn away people without proper documentation that could potentially have a great need for its services. Furthermore, those who do meet those standards are supplied with only enough food to last three to four days of the month (H&H Handout). Spirit & Truth Ministries serves anyone who comes into his or her establishment. They can provide up to five meals a week. This equates up to 36 to 48 meals a year for Help & Hope and up to 260 meals a year through Spirit and Truth
As a student, practice is crucial to learn group therapy techniques. In order to achieve these practices, I attended 2 support groups of the same topic. Observation and attendance constructs an idea of how group therapy works. Attending this group was important because of the profoundness of its meaning and experiences I have witnessed.
Kawartha Food Share distributes meals, and emergency care needs to over 7,000 people every month. The food share has continuingly been supportive to the needy for 15 years. While this is the case, the City and Country of Peterborough and its 37 member agencies served 6.5 million dollars worth of food over the years! Kawartha Food Share is 15000 sq. foot warehouse and is rented, so even being a non-profit organization, has to pay rent. This ranges from four city food banks, six housing projects, four meal programs, etc.
... a dinner meal can become a luxury. Soup kitchens sometimes become overcrowded and unable to serve everyone in need. As a result, malnutrition is not uncommon among these underprivileged families.
According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 15 million children. During the school year, these children rely on free or reduce breakfast and lunch. When the summer vacation months arrive, these children loose the security of these meals. Feeding America, working alongside the United States Department of Agriculture, provide free summer meals to these children. Unfortunately, not all children and families are aware that these programs are taking place; therefore missing out on a vital resource to help stretch their food dollars throughout the summer

The official mission statement for the House of Compassion is “Called by our faith in Jesus Christ to act in love, the House of Compassion responds to the needs of our neighbors and advocates justice and dignity for all” (Frohwein, 2013). While on earth so much of Jesus ministry was focused on healing, feeding, clothing, and lifting up the marginalized. He feed and healed people before he professed to them that he was the Bread of Life and the Messiah. This is way it is important that we too are willing to feed and clot...
It is no secret that, within the last decade, America has faced an economic crisis of historic proportions. Though the nation appears to be in a state of recovery from the greatest recession since the Great Depression, there are still major issues to address; namely poverty. Poverty today has hit more homes than ever, especially in places such as Eastern North Carolina. According to the 2010 Bureau of Economic Analysis, North Carolina ranked as the ninth wealthiest state with gross domestic production worth $424.9 billion.[2] North Carolina is among the top states for agricultural output, which consists of poultry, tobacco, hogs, cattle, sweet potatoes, and soybeans. A U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey, however, states that North Carolina’s poverty rate spiked to 18 percent, surpassing the official national poverty level of 15.2 percent (1). While those percentages may seem considerably small, it equates to 1.7 million people without adequate housing, health care, education or employment. This ranks North Carolina as the 12th highest poverty state in the nation. Moreover, the federal government reports that at least 20 percent of the residents of 10 Eastern North Carolina counties have consistently reported living in poverty for the past 30 years. These counties of “persistent poverty” include Bertie, Bladen, Columbus, Halifax, Martin, Northampton, Pitt, Robeson, Tyrell and Washington County.
The recent devastations of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have taken countless lives through death as well as the loss of homes and belongings. It will take some people years to rebuild their lives to a fraction of what they were before the storm. We, NHS Officers and our peers, felt that we were called upon to help the communities that lost so much. Our town has felt the impact of numerous hurricanes, like Irene and Sandy in consecutive years, but we were able to recover with the help of donations and organizations like FEMA which provided food and clothing. Thus, we concluded that the best ways to help those affected were clothing and food drives. After receiving approval from the NHS advisor, Principal, and Vice-Principal we began to advertise

Lois M. Collins, Desert News, is also a good strategy for addressing the problem of the homelessness in Tempe. However, it is not as effective as the National Coalition for the Homeless (2006). The former strategy encourages people to donate the excess part of what they own, including food, tools, and water, to needy and homeless individuals (McNamara, 2008). The problem with the strategy is that it does not have the power to mobilize people to donate their belongings to the homeless, as most people wish to keep what they have in excess for future needs and unforeseen eventualities.

After volunteering three times with the social action committee and high school group from Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church in the previous years, the Houston Food Bank became very familiar both in regards of their history and how their volunteerism works. The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization that seeks donations of non-perishable food items to serve the low-income families in eighteen counties across Texas. However, during a recent trip to the food bank with the University of Houston-Downtown College of Business, the interactions with a larger group of classmates became more dynamic. Three main topics involving group work at the Houston Food Bank are service learning, community service, and volunteerism. Service learning
This past weekend I went and volunteered at StraightWay Training Center in Hungerford, Texas, along with some of my other batch mates. StraightWay Training Center (SWTC) is a Christian-based drug and rehabilitation center, which is the only program of its kind that provides treatment for whole families, unmarried mothers, single males, and females, as well as single parents with children. Using Christianity as a basis for their treatment center, at StraightWay the ultimate goal is to teach every attendee the principles of life which include how to deal with everyday issues and how to manage a good healthy lifestyle. This is accomplished through an intensive curriculum of spiritual, academic and vocational training over a period of
