Throughout the years, new products are invented and old ones are improved. Although many ideas are discussed and even considered for production, few make it through all the steps. Therefore, struggling through the product life cycle allows for the market to accept or decline products (Salomon, Marshall, & Stuart, 2012). In addition, changes to marketing strategies are continuous, and companies strive to satisfy wants and desires from customers.
Having a family discussion as to what product to choose, Heinz Ketchup won the battle because it has been a staple in our household as long as we have been a family. Beginning in 1876, Heinz Tomato Ketchup was introduced by Henry Heinz, and it quickly became a household name. Ketchup became a sought after product because it could be preserved for around a year (Wiggins, 2014). However, further research of the ingredients proved to be a concern because consuming a large amount of preservatives was deemed to be harmful. Therefore, a leader in fighting against the use of preservatives, Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley partnered with Henry Heinz, and a recipe was created that no longer required the use of preservatives. In addition, the year 1906 became memorable because Heinz Ketchup was produced preservative-free. Recyclable bottles were developed and used in the 1990’s (H.J. Heinz Company, 2016). With another bottling renovation, Heinz introduced the upside down bottle in 2002. Through the growth and maturity stages, Heinz Ketchup has had one flavor, but realizing special needs and desires of customers, varieties began to arise including no salt added, reduced sugar, and organic. Having portrayed the same look over the years, the Heinz Tomato Ketchup label changed to reflect the slogan “Grown Not Made®”. Therefore, the pickle was replaced with a vine ripened tomato with the slogan written underneath.
Although Heinz Ketchup has been a household name for many years, the company continues to change labeling and provides additional information to the customer. Therefore, the year 2010 brought about another addition to remind customers that Heinz Ketchup is made from basic ingredients, and labels were printed with the saying “Simply Heinz” (H.J. Heinz Company, 2016).
