Health Proposal 2016: School-Wide Healthy Living
The Objective… This proposal addresses the serious issue of our youth becoming more obese and less active. For children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on their website, www.cdc.gov that 17% would be considered obese. This is a serious concern for our society. I want to propose a new plan of health and wellness for our school that encourages our students to eat healthy and exercise daily. New healthy habits now can make a huge impact as our students grow. Include a physical fitness assessment such as the “The President’s Challenge,” or the “Fitnessgram” to all students and report results to parents twice a year. Track the physical fitness assessments yearly to ensure wellness benefits are being met.
• Require allotted recess time daily for open play.
• Redesign the playground to include a track or walking trail. Assign one of the playground monitors/ parent volunteers to walk on the track/trail during recess times. Promote this track/trail as the “BUDDY trail” everyone is welcome to walk encouraging social time while also exercising. Host events on the trail like: Walk with a teacher/principal, Laps and Laughs, or Moving to the Music.
• Incorporate one semester of health and whole body wellness into the curriculum. Include units on nutrition, substance abuse, conflict resolution, and sex education at age appropriate intervals.
• Require CPR and AED training for all teenage students.
• Start a wellness club for teachers and staff.
• Host Family Fun Nights throughout the year to highlight the healthy progress going on in the school. Use these occasions to inform and educate parents on current wellness and nutrition issues.
