I think a mentally healthy community would be filled with an abundance of resources and opportunities for everyone in need of assistance. Having accessibility to therapists, crisis lines, social services, physical therapy, correctional facilities, affordable health care, affordable housing, and mental hospitals would be a good step towards a mentally healthy community. When I think about mental health, I generally think about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; feeling safe, feeling loved, being productive/sense of accomplishment, having physiological wellness, and good self. Mental health is a state emotional wellness, which allows you to effectively cope with life stresses and is partly derived from having major needs fulfilled. Just as mentioned in class, I think being mentally healthy, stems from social support. A simple act of kindness can help a person’s mental state. Therefore Community is …show more content…

Some of the major problems that I have noticed in my community and that were listed by Levine, D. D. Perkins and D. V. Perkins (2005) are substance abuse, suicide, domestic violence and assault, arrest, poverty, unemployment, lack of health care, low income, lack of affordable housing, debt, gender inequality, not having access to trained professionals, child abuse and neglect, divorce, teen pregnancy, and rise of sexually transmitted disease. People have also been impacted by current events such as the devastating fires occurring in northern California, the mass shootings and also, (but unrelated to the mass destruction), the presidential election. These are some of the factors have created emotional constraints and they are some of the many stresses in a society that can cause chronic disorders and negatively impact personal relationships.
