Topic and the Target Audience of the Health Promotion Project
The topic I have chosen for the Health Promotion Plan focuses on cerebrovascular diseases, mainly stroke. Since stroke is number forth cause of death in the United State, it appears as a clear choice for educating the population about this disease, risk factors, manifestation, and treatment. Stroke and heart diseases are both preventable and share many common risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and alcohol use, unhealthy diet, or stress. Working on neurology floor, one can tell that the general public knowledge about stroke is not sufficient, and the awareness about this problem needs to be addressed constantly in order to reduce the number of possible disabilities as well as the amount of money spent on treatment of the stroke patient. For the affective domain the best methods of learning include role modeling, role-playing, simulation gaming, and group discussion, when learners are exposed to conflict of values or various ethical problems. Teaching in the psychomotor domain uses demonstration, return demonstration, mediated instruction, and self-directed study, often with the help of mental imaging. Psychomotor domain is a skill set that requires time to practice in order to reach proficient or even expert level.

Personal health is extremely important to everyone around the world. But it is especially important to citizens of the United States of America. Being one of the leading countries in Health technology and also in food and beverage leaves most people choosing between living a healthy lifestyle and indulging in the varieties of food we offer. Across the country, many people are living with pre-existing conditions, living in food deserts, living below the poverty line and a long list of other factors that either hinders them from eating healthy or force them to eat healthily. When trying to live a healthy lifestyle in this country not only does the promotion of prevention matter, but also the promotion of Career and job opportunities matter just as much. In the United States, Money equals Power and money also equal the opportunity to create and live a healthier lifestyle.
It is frequently expressed by stroke patients and caregivers that they have not been afforded the suitable information related to stroke, treatments, or post discharge management and recovery, and that the information conveyed is perceived as insufficient and complex. The problem is that there is a failure of healthcare professionals in identifying the learning needs of stroke patients associated with a deficiency in knowledge of just how to access and communicate this crucial information. Indeed, while patient education can be time consuming and nurses may not be properly trained in stroke education it is a nursing duty to provide these teachings to patients and caregivers prior to discharge. Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
The purpose of the scholarly paper part two is to demonstrate the completion of the evidence-based homeless health promotion project; it is specific to the population living in Miami, Florida. Part two of the project presents evidence-based interventions to address measurable and unfavorable health outcomes associated with risk factors that were identified in part one of the project. Also, health promotion project evaluation will be provided.
The South contributed to the emergence of public health strategy in the United States by demonstrating the need for non-passive government presence in times of economic and social hardship. The South was able to have implement public health strategies during the Civil War, but their destitute state after the war proved difficult in maintaining successful public health strategies.
Strokes are the most common cause of disability and leading cause of death in the United States. Estimates of the number of stroke survivors in the United States exceed 3 million, and nearly 150,000 Americans died from stroke in 1995. The frequency with which strokes occur and the devastating effects they can have on survivors and their families make provision of general information about prevention and management an essential element of public health education. Previous researchers have found that between 14% and 40% of adults cannot name a single risk factor associated with stroke. This is reason for concern among the medical community.
When the blood glucose is higher than the normal levels, this is known as diabetes disease. The body turns the food we eat into glucose or sugar and use it for energy. The insulin is a hormone created by the pancreas to help the glucose get into the cells. The sugar builds up in the blood because either the body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t well use its own insulin (CDC, 2015). In the United States diabetes is known as the seventh leading cause of death. There are different types of diabetes. However, there are two main types of diabetes and these are; Diabetes type 1 and Diabetes type 2 (CDC, 2015).
Even if we forget about the environment we still have to consider biology as the unique feature in each of us. We usually don 't take into account the fact that all our learning abilities, our concentration and focus abilities are intricately tied into the chemical processes of our body. Cognitive science tells that our consciousness and mind is not localized but an extension of the higher thinking processes, also known as Embodied cognition (Eleanor Rosch et al., 1991) . So, we need to recognize what process or strategy makes it easier for our mind-body to process information. So, it is important to include the body into any learning strategy we apply. Hence the need to include kinaesthetic or active experience based learning into our teaching
Education is neither linear nor static. It requires evolution and fluctuations. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at UNC Charlotte, and now it is time for a prime conversion to be made. Attending the Masters of Public Health program at UNC Charlotte would open the door for me to pursue my career aspirations in health care. Specifically, I am interested in epidemiological methods in community health. My ambition, perseverance, and work ethic have brought me to a high point, and enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program would raise that threshold even higher.
A tactile learner best understands things when physical activity is incorporated in their classes and study sessions. I am a tactile learner, this means that I learn best using hands-on learning rather than listening to lectures or watching demonstrations. Physical movement helps tactile learners better comprehend and remember what they’re being taught in class. Personally, I find it easier to understand complex concepts by building them. In physics class last year we were assigned many labs. We had to make airplanes to explain a principle regarding aerodynamics. The Bachelor’s degree for health and wellness opens up a number of opportunities for me in my occupational future. The opportunity I would be most interested in at this time is a Fitness and Wellness Coordinator. A fitness and wellness coordinator has a multitude of duties that they would need to preform every day from supervising other instructors to organizing and overseeing fitness and wellness programs. This could also include managing outreach activities, teaching classes in an area of specialization, or even training employees on environmental awareness conservation, or safety topics. Stroke is a serious medical condition that affects people of all ages specifically older adults. People suffer from a stroke when there is decreased blood flow to the brain. Blood supply decreases due to a blockage or a rupture of a blood vessel which then leads to brain tissues dying. The two types of stroke are ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. An ischemic stroke is caused by a blood clot blocking the artery that brings oxygenated blood to the brain. On the other hand, a hemorrhagic stroke is when an artery in the brain leaks or ruptures (“About Stroke,” 2013). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of adult disability” (“About Stroke,” 2013).
