Trends in Health Information Technology
Health Informatics is the science of processing healthcare information data, and currently my graduate program area of study. Another name used for health informatics is health information technology (HIT). HIT primarily consists of a variety of software and technologies that stores, gathers and shares patient information electronically. All healthcare information consists of having patient information computerized to be accessed by healthcare providers, state and government agencies, insurance companies and patients. The HCAHPS survey helps with reimbursement dollars to an organization for higher scores on patient surveys for quality of care and patient satisfaction scores. Survey results are collected by the U.S. government for Medicare reimbursement rates. Healthcare systems are moving from fee-for-service payment to value-based payment systems to improve patient outcomes, efficiency and costs. Therefore, healthcare organizations must think of ways to satisfy their patients in all areas, and one of them is giving the patient transparency in costs, convenience, and control of their health data. Mobile applications that allow user-friendly, open access, emergency room wait times, payment options, and appointment scheduling are one of the measures that organizations are using to increase patient satisfaction. By putting this information and access in the hands of the patients, it allows them to take part in their healthcare and allows them the feeling of being a part of the organization’s programs and practices. With the use of mobile applications, patients are provided convenience, and organizations benefit from higher patient satisfaction scores and, more payments are likely to be received due to the convenience of patient payment processing through mobile or …show more content…

Healthcare innovation plays a big role in most organizations, because the ideas and suggestions from associates who work with products and processes can lead to new devices and processes. With analysis of patient information, from electronic medical records, state registries and even national healthcare agencies, research can lead to findings that foresee new services, epidemics and community education. Also, data analysis can track patient behavior, social data, that helps in the areas of medicine, advanced provided care and better patient outcomes (Foley, 2017). With the new value based care models in organizations, it is important to recognize and be receptive of the local and surrounding patient population. Gathering data on social determinants with the ability to share such finding across sectors will allow for specific focuses on social needs. By examining data from frequent and familiar patients who visit emergency rooms, an organization can pinpoint services that drive costs. Programs such as Community Health Peer (CHP) and Data Across Sectors for Health (DASH), allow a look into other highly utilized services at other healthcare organizations that may prove to be drive costs (Leventhal, Hagland, Raths, & Landi,
