Healing A Wounded Heart by William Orem story starts by, telling readers what happened during a quiet summer evening in 1893 and what happened right before Dr. Daniel conducted the surgery. While the story by K12 book, tells about the second year of the civil war in 1862 and why Dr.Daniel working at a hospital was special during this time. Daniel Hale Williams and Freedman’s Hospital By K12, gives readers more information on how he changed medical care. “One reason was that Dr. Williams insisted on cleanliness in the hospital. The operating rooms were scrubbed with antiseptic to kill germs and bacteria before each procedure. The staff was required to change their outside clothes and wear freshly cleaned clothes while at work in the hospital.
There have been many stories about Dr.Daniel Hale Williams. Today, we will be looking at two stories. Healing A Wounded Heart by William Orem and Daniel Hale Williams and Freedman’s Hospital By K12.
Popular television paint a glorified image of doctors removing the seriousness of medical procedures. In the non-fiction short story, “The First Appendectomy,” William Nolen primarily aims to persuade the reader that real surgery is full of stress and high stakes decisions rather than this unrealistic view portrayed by movies.
The book which I have chosen is County by David A. Ansell, M.D., MPH. This book entails the story of Dr. Ansell and his journey of becoming a doctor from the time he starts his residency to the end of his career at one of the nation's most controversial hospitals. The name of this hospital was Cook County Hospital (C.C.H.), this hospital no longer exists and now it is called John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Dr. Ansell’s journey was an impactful one because he was a first hand witness to the struggles the hospital faced in everyday life and how much change had to be done to better the hospital. C.C.H. was a public hospital and people without health insurance were able to get treatment at this hospital but there was a price one had to pay, People had to wait hours to see a doctor and this possibly could be life threatening to the patient. This is the struggle one has to deal with being uninsured. More than that the hospital was filled with overcrowded rooms, inefficient doctors, and even the politics that ran the hospital were controversial. Throughout the book though Dr. Ansell talks about different health care providers who despite working in a corrupt hospital that is basically broken they were dedicated to fixing C.C.H. and loved working there.

In the “Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator is extremely uncanny due to the reader’s inability to trust him. Right from the beggining the reader can tell that the narrator is crazy although the narrator does proclaim that he is sane. Since a person cannot trust a crazy person, the narrator himself is unreliable and therefore uncanny. Also as the story progress the narrator falls deeper and deeper into lunacy making him more and more unreliable, until the end of the story where the narrator gives in to his insanity, and the reader loses all ability to believe him.
Resection was a process that “involved cutting open the limb, sawing out the damaged bone, and then closing the incision” (Jones, 1). Resection allows the patient to keep his limbs but it requires a great ordeal of time and skill. This also contributed to the common practice of amputation during the war. But there were cases where surgeons did use this method. Terry J. Jones said in his NY Times article, “resections were used more frequently after surgeons learned that amputations had a much higher mortality rate” (Jones, 1). In another article by Corydon Ireland, it describes Mitchell Adam’s, a Harvard lecturer, grandfather who served as a volunteer surgeon during the Civil War. In the article, “Adams was not a champion of hasty amputations, but argued for excision and other limb-saving measures. And he describes the everyday pressures of a country practice in Framingham, Mass” (Ireland, 1). This meant that not all surgeons at the time only wanted to amputate but strived for alternate methods. This new knowledge shows that some surgeons were more dedicated to thinking about the well-being of their patients than others and this opens up to other possibilities that may have occurred during the war. This allows an image to come to mind of a surgeon diligently operating on a soldier with care and compassion. The 2nd Brigade of 101st Airborne Division found out in the summer of 2004 that they had to prepare for the war in the Middle East more particularly for Iraq. With Colonel Todd Ebel in Command of the 2nd Division with a year to prepare over 3,400 men and woman he got right to work. Colonel Ebel started by choosing his staff and who he thought was fit to take charge and lead this ever more complicated war. It was a huge religious civil war taking place in Iraq at the time with the Sunnis at war against the Shi’ite and after the capture of Saddam insurgency started uprising immediately. This uprising along with the uprising of Muqtada al-Sadr a key leader that had lots of violent followers that soon grew into a form of a militia called Mahdi Army which became another huge problem for the U.S. because the line between a legitamite populist movement and a huge theocratic organized-crime and terror ring was a thin one. The 2nd Brigade Infantry Battalions consisted of 1-502nd (First Strike) and 2-502nd (Strike Force) and 2nd brigade as a whole is known as the “Black Hearts”. Ebel’s mission was to deny insurgent’s access to Baghdad through his AO and as intelligence increased to uproot and destroy insurgent safe havens, while also training the IA so they could ensure the stability of the region later on. Ebel chose Lt. Col. Kunk as commander of “First Strike” 1-502nd and Lt. Col. Haycock as commander of “Strike Force” 2-502nd. While medical staff had been prominent in armies for hundreds of years, the American Civil War brought a new era of medical treatment and personnel to the world and future of warfare. In the book Complications, Atul writes about his experiences as a surgical residents and demonstrates a point of view of surgery that does not idealize it, but instead displays the actual pressure and complexity it actually is. Atul Gawande speaks to fellow surgeons, surgeons to be or simply those who believe that the study of surgery is just memorizing procedures, nonetheless it’s so much more complex due to the fact that every case that arrives is different. In Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” I have confidence in that the narrator is a reliable resource. He described the way he murder an old man because he felt the man had a “vulture eye.” And that the eye was an “evil eye.’ The narrator couldn’t stand seeing the eye anymore. However, the narrator articulates how he is not a psychotic man. As if he was doing someone a favor by killing the old man. The narrator wasn’t concerned what the readers thought about his actions but about his state of mind. Some of his actions lead one to believe he isn’t a reliable source but he was the only one there; well, that is still alive. Although his actions coexisted unethical behavior, the source is reliable due to the fact he didn’t hide anything, he admits to the readers how and why he murder the old man.
