My purpose for writing this paper was to show my fellow students that universities have changed over the years and that the perception that this is the only good education or that it is more elite option is not a true standard in today’s society. I want others to learn that choosing an educational standard based solely on their name and social status is not most important thing. Students should choose what works for their budget, life style and where they want to be in their future. If we focus on the name brand Universities, many Americans today would not get a higher education, nor would they be able to secure their futures. Universities in the past were for men only and were more stringent on their regulations in regards to rules and expectations of their students (Scruton, 2010). Todays universities are more concerned with extra activities like sports and social aspects than actual education. Many students are spending more time in sports and parties than actually advancing their learning (Scruton, 2010). This was outrageous to Scruton, he believed that although universities made great strides in being more available to everyone across every walk of life , and even the advances in how students are able to attend their classes, they forgot that the actual education was what was important (Scruton, 2010). He talked about the money that both student and parents are spending on the lack luster education the students are actually getting is a complete waste (Scruton, 2010). Students would be better off if they concentrated on their studies and came out of college with a better way of thinking and an education they can secure their future with. If you think about it this way, why would anyone waste money buying a house if they new that it would fall apart around them. If you are going to invest in your future you need to know that you are spending the money in the right way. You could never have a guarantee that things will work out perfect, as if everyone that gets a degree has the perfect job waiting for them, but you need to choose the right fit for where you want to be. The newer colleges today allow for online learning and a wide range of learning opportunities to their students (Scruton, 2010). These types of differences in learning for the students comes at a better more affordable price than the bigger universities, which appeals to a larger group of students. Many students today are working around work, family obligations and life in general and they don’t have the time or money to waste on the fancy
