Hate Crimes are a very touchy subject but as far back as we can think they have been happening. Whether it be a bombing, a beating or maybe even just a verbal assault on someone because they are Jewish (anti-Semitic) or racial assaults because they are African-American or of colored decent. Even because of sexual preference these things happen. As studies show they have been happening steadily and in one place where it has happened extremely steady are campuses across Florida. Now this is most certainly a problem, and this problem has to be dealt with not only teachers, administrations and law enforcement but by us as students as well.

Lombardi, State of Maine vs. Masotta and United States vs. Little showed how extreme cases which include hate crimes because of race can get. With two of these cases including pipe bombs places in African-American dorms and institutions. They also included verbal threat with one disturbing message that could be a poster board for this issue. The message went as such: “I Wonder what your going to look like dead? I wonder if when you die you'll lose your color. Like the blood starts to leave your body and your gonna... start deteorating and blood starts to leave your skin...You get the picture? You’re dead!" These are just some of the problems and stories which are in our history.

The limited amount of reporting agencies, combined with the small group of universities that actually report all their hate crime activity, leads the statistics and numbers for hate crimes to be drastically underrepresented. In some cases, students, victims or witnesses, are unaware that a hate crime is taking place. Bias-motivated crimes may not always be apparent as such, so they may be labeled as regular crimes: robbery, arson, murder. And if they are not apparent as hate crimes, school official should take an active initiative to investigate whether the crime was motivated by the perpetrator’s bias towards the victim.
