Harry Potter’s faith in himself was almost non-existent throughout the whole series until the very end of the Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows. There he faced off Voldemort in the final battle of Hogwarts, ready to sacrifice himself so Voldemort could be defeated. Once Harry realized he was still alive, he knew he had to kill Voldemort. He changed from having no faith in himself to having complete faith in himself to kill the Dark Lord. In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Rowling showed the change of the main character from one full of self-doubt to one having confidence in himself as The Chosen One. The simile on page 362 showed how useless Harry felt. "and Harry felt they were as insignificant as insects beneath that wide sky." He felt as though he were no help at all and that there was no hope. Another simile was on page 417. "Harry felt a slight squirm of discomfort, as though a small snake had stirred inside him." The quote showed how he felt, as he was uneasy and uncomfortable. He didn’t feel as though he could conquer or defeat anything. At the beginning of the book, the tone was dark and morose. Harry was ready to fight as long as possible to protect his friends. In the middle of the book, the tone was tense and suspenseful. Upon learning the clues left behind by Dumbledore, Harry discovered the Horcruxes and destroyed them one by one. At the end of the book, the tone was calm and grave. Harry realized he had to die to defeat Voldemort. He let Voldemort kill him knowing it would make the Dark Lord mortal again. Harry trusted that the others would finish him off, but Harry came back to life and realized he must do it. He accepted his title as the Chosen One and had the confidence to face down Voldemort and then he won. Tone was used to show his acceptance of his role to defeat
