In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, J.K Rowling explains how love is a strong magic. This book displayed how Harry Potter and his friends looking for Horcruxes and destroyed them so they could stop Lord Voldemort’s reign. In the book, Harry Potter represents good and love while Voldemort illustrates evil and selfishness. The theme of this story is Love can conquer Death. This theme is important to the novel because it created conflict between characters. Conquering Death idea of Voldermort is to be the most powerful and immortal being. Harry, however believed that people need to continue loving and respecting people, who passed away.
The theme first shows itself in Godric Hollow, where Harry Potter and his friend visited his parent’s grave. On the stele, there is a quote on it, “The last enemy shall be destroyed is death”(Rowling 328). This refers to Harry’s parent had conquered Death. When Harry was a child, they sacrificed themselves to save Harry from Lord Voldemort. Their death resembles their undying love to Harry. This showed that love is stronger than death because when Harry’s parents died, their love for Harry never left Harry. This also created a shield between Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort. He couldn’t harm Harry until he used Harry’s blood to get through the barrier.
The author developed this theme by revealing more examples of love conquering death. In the story, an elf named Dobby, a friend of Harry and used to be a slave, died trying to save Harry and his friend from his old master. Rowling speaks of this situation, “Dobby has
