“Harrison Bergeron” is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut’s story shows the struggles of the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron who is a symbol that represents defiance, and independency. Harrison is used in the story to show how the government is using the three new Amendments as a cruel way to force equality between everyone. The new Amendments added to the Constitution are the 211th, 212th, and 213th they kept everyone equal and nobody was allowed to stand out (177). The story shows one main conflict which is the equality of everyone and it is between Harrison and the government.

There are a lot of negative effects surrounding his appearance. “Harrison’s appearance was Halloween and hardware” (179). When Harrison has to wear all of his handicaps they make his appearance unappealing, and they show everyone else that it doesn’t matter what you look like because of the equality between everyone, so no one person has the upper hand. Harrison has to wear certain things on his body, so that his intelligence doesn’t get out of control. The handicaps only show that Harrison can continue to outgrow them because the H-G men are having a hard time thinking of new handicaps for him (179). Another negative effect on Harrison Bergeron is when he escaped jail because it didn’t get him very far, except the fact that he claimed he was an emperor and everyone must obey what he wanted (180). After he got out of jail he went to the studio where the Ballerinas were and he danced without his handicaps, with his empress, and then he got shot and killed because he didn’t obey Diana Moon Glampers orders to stop what he was doing (180-181). The story also showed positivity, by showing that Harrison Bergeron was speaking out and being defiant to help his people.
