Harrison Bergeron is a hero to society. He is a hero because he was the only person willing to take off his handicap. Bergeron was a brave person. No one else was brave enough to try to be unique. Everyone was following what they were told to never questioning it, but Bergeron wasn't. He wants to discover new things. Yes he might have been scaring people, but they had no reason to be scared. They could have been helping and joining instead of being scared and rebelling from him.
Harrison Bergeron took off his handicaps because he was willing to stand up for what's right. They should have understood why he was standing on the stage yelling "i am the emperor". He was not trying to be a threat. Bergeron is a hero to several people. Except, to others he is a threat. Harrison might have come on a little too strong, but like people say,"you should not judge a book by its cover". He was just trying to state how those handicaps were taking the people's emotions away. When really they should be free to feel their own emotions. Not what the government was channeling them too. The government should be helping the country, not destroying it. Some people got headaches due to these handicaps. The government would channel all of these people's emotions.

These handicaps not only took away their emotions, but gave them seriously horrible headaches. They gave the people something that they described as,"visions". The people would have screeches in their handicaps. Harrison Bergeron does not deserve to be known as the crazy man who jumped on the stage and ripped off his handicaps. He should be known as the brave man who was willing to take off his handicaps. Bergeron might have seemed like a threat at the moment. But he is a hero. Other people might think of him as a threat to society, but they need to read the story more carefully, because it is unreasonable to describe someone as a threat when they are just trying to be
One similarity between the text and the movie was that everyone was equal in every way. It was important that the filmmakers keep this in the movie because it’s the most important detail in the story. In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron”, it says, “They were equal in every which way. Nobody was smarter than everyone else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than everybody else” (1). If the filmmakers had never kept the equality part in 2081, the storyline would not make any sense. In the movie, everyone that needed handicaps had them including George, Harrison, and the ballerinas.

If you aren't equal you would have to wear handicaps to limit your extraordinary strength and smarts. As the story progresses, Harrison Bergeron is trying to send a message about society.

They are recalling the time when their son, Harrison Bergeron, was taken from his home by the handicapper general. It was an unhappy thought “but George and Hazel couldn't think about it very hard” (Vonnegut 1) due to the mental radio that separated the two from regular functioning emotions. Although Hazel was not affected by the handicap itself, it became a societal norm to act almost robot-like.

In the story, the future US government implements a mandatory handicap for any citizens who is over their standards of normal. The goal of the program is to make everyone equal in physical capabilities, mental aptitude and even outward appearance. The important similarity in 2081 and “Harrison Bergeron” is the fact that Harrison’s actions were broadcast on national television. This greatly impacts the story and movie because of this small detail. You can tell Harrison is very serious about telling everyone the message he trying to convey. If it weren’t broadcasted nationally his actions would have no meaning because only a small amount of people would have heard his speech. A quote proving this is, “Cries of consternation came from the television set”… “I am Emperor! Cried Harrison” (Pg3). In the text, people strive for excellence and use their image to make a difference in the world. However, the Handicapper General and the creation of the 211th, 212th, and the 213th Amendments to the Constitution, greatly held back the potential of the people. The author states,” Harrison plucked the mental handicap from her ear, snapped off her physical handicaps with marvelous delicacy.” People could easily take off their handicaps whenever they wanted to. This clearly shows us the reader that the text is telling how easy it is to take off handicaps. But if it is easy to take off handicaps then that means the handicaps in “Harrison Bergeron”, is useless to the people with abilities. They can take off the handicaps whenever they want to but they would have to do it secretly. George has to wear an earpiece which means he could take it out,but he would have to do it secretly when no one associated with the government was watching. Harrison was the one person that refused to be different, he didn't want equality among people. He thought it was good everyone was different. If you lived like this and happened to be the few that were above average, he would be a hero to you, because no one wants to walk around all day hearing loud piercing sounds that made you forget everything. The definition of a hero is a person who is admired for courage, in this case Harrison had a lot of courage. He did not care that the government would kill him for resisting, he refused to wear the big bulky metal box and have his memory erased. He wanted to stand up for every single person and show them how the government was controlling them. Harrison was a true hero for putting himself in danger just to save others. Harrison was killed showing people that it was perfectly okay to be above average and not be mediocre or the same as everyone else. Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
