Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc.: Rewarding Our People Section I: Summary of Facts This article is about Harrah’s Entertainment; one of the largest casino entertainments made a decision to move away from being a product based company to a strategic marketing company geared towards customer satisfaction by implementing a customer focused rewards program. Bill Harrah, the founder of the company established the company’s reputation on the premise of pride of the employees working for “the best in the business” while given more attention to the condition of the properties. However, when Gary Loveman joined the company as the new Chief operating officer, he made a move towards customer service. Gary Loveman hired Marilyn Winn, the head of Human Resources, to change how the company engaged in people development. Winn came up with a strategic plan to develop Harrah’s human capital. As a result, Winn is faced with the difficult task of improving employee motivation and job satisfaction in a rough economy after 9/11, which changed our nation forever. Although, the company gained market share it did not quite meet the company’s projected level. Many of Harrah’s employees deemed the goals set by Winn’s current incentive program to be unrealistic; on the other hand, others felt a sense of entitlement for bonuses. Therefore, Winn’s job is to provide a recommendation to Gary Loveman, on how to motivate and get employees energized. In order to motivate the employees, Winn had implemented an incentive pay plan to rewards Harrah’s employees in all of its properties for improving customer service. The company’s purpose for incentive program was to implant a competitive mindset in its employees as well as to show the employees that they are core of the... ... middle of paper ... ...xamples was at Dupont’s fibers division, which employed approximately 20,000 people (Masternak). The plan’s designers intended to develop a “program to reward employee contributions, in the belief that sharing the rewards as well as the risks of the division’s financial performance would help the business succeed in the market place”(Masternak). Section IV: Recommendation for Winn Winn could nothing or implement a rewards program that rewards the employee with more than cash rewards; employee recognition program namely employee of the month with a paid day off or a gift card. As part of the employee focused plan, the company should allow employees’ input on how to become more customer focused, efficient, and effective organization. This would greatly improve employees’ satisfaction and help the company achieve its overall goal of providing quality customer service.
Employees protested, “that supervisors should have received a reduced bonus because they were not working as hard as they are and the company might be playing with the numbers” (Beer & Collins, 2008 p.6). A beneficial system for the new Scanlon Plan is to rearranged payout count. This will help to regain trust amongst employees and management. Equity Theory stresses integrity to all compensation arrangement and if this is effectively executed, then this will resolve the mistrust issue that employees have with their management team. The rewards should not be paid on a consistent month-to-month basis, instead, on a settled proportion plan, which gives rewards "each nth time the right behavior is demonstrated" (Bauer and Erdogan, 2013, p. 112). Traditionally, this would imply that workers are paid reward each time a specific measure of cash in permitted payroll is met. “The current permitted payroll is at 38% of sales value” (Engstrom, 2008). This requires no change. Instead, when Engstrom comes to a permitted payroll of one million dollars, then 10% of that sum should naturally disbursed to workers as rewards. This tackles numerous past issues with the Scanlon
The Department of Human Resources is involved with many important aspects of a business, like staffing, compensation, benefits, and much more. As the new Director of Human Resources for a 150-room, full service hotel in downtown Sheboygan, I am in charge of turning around the hotel. Being employed as a purchasing clerk and a sales support at the Furniture Outlet has given me the opportunity to fully understand how the presence of certain reward compromise or programs helps to form a viable workplace for both an employer and an employee and also the organization as a whole. Given the tasks and expectations that are to be achieved as a purchasing clerk, I often find myself thinking about how the work is to be done and in what ways can it be done suffic...
The Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant is confronted with several organizational issues. The Scanlon Bonus Plan is no longer effective, the employees do not trust the plan or management, and the employees lack concern for the company. Engstom must find a way to increase motivation for its employees and implement an incentive plan that will be successful.
Kim and Mauborgne (2003) suggest that it is critical to adjust the employees to accept change and to identify how change can happen with limited resources. They also noted, “Many CEOs recognize the importance of getting employees motivated to make changes, but they make the mistake of trying to reform incentives through the whole organization.” In their article, they described how Bratton was able to solve the motivation problems at the police department. To clarify, Bratton recognized that key influencers at the police department could work to his advantage in implementing change. He also recognized that he only needed to motivate these key influencers because they “act like kingpins in bowling: when you hit them just right, all the pins topple over (Kim & Mauborgne,
In order to continue to thrive and compete at its highest level and potential, we decided to put a total rewards program in place. Rewards programs will help engage employees and bring out their competitive spirit. If employees continue to receive rewards for their hard work, they will continue to work harder. This rewards program will also build the level of trust between the employees and managers. When employees receive rewards for their hard work, they feel valued at the company that employs them. When they feel valued at work, then their morale is at a high level. The sales associates that have a high level of morality often get more sales. These increased sales are the foundation of the success of the company. This not only will give us a competitive edge, but it will also create a pleasant work environment. A total rewards programs will help benefit both the company and the staff ("About T-Mobile Usa, Inc.",
Reward and recognition has to be promoted for small and large achievements. An effective reward’s program keeps employees engaged, dedicated, and committed to the organization.
"A simple thing such as giving a employee a little reward for outstanding performance for a month or a year could help motivate other employees to want to do better so that they could have the chance to be recognized for their outstanding work.
The culture of appreciating employees for their hard work and achievements by incentives shows how the organization values their employees. Lincoln believed “Status is of great importance in all human relationships. The greatest incentive that money has, usually, is that is it a symbol of success... The resulting status is the real incentive... Money alone can be an incentive to the miser only. There must be complete honesty and understanding between the hourly worker and management if high efficiency is to be obtained”. This shows how harmoniously the labor and management have to work together to produce
After that first week he realized that employees were not receiving a valuable discount in return on the products they were selling on a daily basis. Employee discounts are motivators in an employee’s performance. Employee discounts allow employees to purchase the products they are trying to sell and have a better understanding by being able to connect with the customers because they have one themselves. Best Buy as a company took on the challenge to create a culture that surrounds learning and the development for its employees. The company created an incentive program called “Path to Excellence” which helps aid the employees career paths but also receiving extrinsic rewards for their outstanding performance. To break it down further, employees earn virtual badges as they progress through different learning levels. Since the program has launched Best Buy has seen improvement in three key metrics:” The close rate improved 129 basis points; revenue per transaction increased $3.31; and services and connections sales increased 37 basis points” (Freifeld, Lorri 2013), overall making it a successful employee engagement program. Another key motivator to success in performance by employees is money. Pay sometimes is a huge motivator when it comes to the

There is considerable debate over merit pay and the effect it has on employees within an organization. Psychologists believe merit pay is related to the incentive theory of psychology; people respond to rewards and with the proper motivation, it increases performance (Cherry). Employers consider merit pay an effective tool and a form of competition strategy for motivating employees to achieve positive performance outcomes. Many employers ignore the fact that incentive plans may motivate some individuals while others have high work ethics and do not need motivation. The intent of this paper is to discuss merit pay used by companies, the motivational factors on employees to reach high achievement, and the challenges that employees face due
In any organization, sometimes, monetary schemes doesnot get people involve to pursue work in a certain way, rather it demoralize and threatens the self-esteem of employees.
