Animals in Captivity Zoos are great attraction places that have significant information to spread about the animals they have, but do the media and public know what is happening behind the cages of the exotic animals shown on display? Zoos keeping exotic wild life in captivity is miserable for the animals because they are incapable of exercising their physical and mental practices as well as they could in their natural habitats and are almost in worst living conditions than in their original environments. Animals are affected when in captivity because, according to Kah Ying Choo, “these creatures are unable to learn in a way that will help them achieve their full potential and realize their authentic being” (Choo 3). Zoos often try to “cure”, more so conceal the issues of Zoochosis with enrichment programs. These enrichment programs include giving the animals distracting toys and puzzles to play with, complex additions to the animal’s enclosures, as well as food that takes the animal longer to eat. The Central Park Zoo, for example, spent twenty-five thousand dollars on behavioral therapy for their animals, specifically their polar bear. Although enrichment programs are used regularly in zoos, in Laura Smith’s research, it states that the enrichment programs only reduce stereotypical behavior fifty-three percent of the time. Another common concealer zoos use for the animals are drugs, most popular drugs are Valium, Prozac, and Antipsychotics. Valium is used more towards the animals that encounter the issues of anxiety and seizures. The drug Prozac treats animals with depression, trichotillomania, bipolar disorder, and panic disorder.
