Globetrotting in the 1920’s The game of basketball today has taken the world by storm. Basketball has become one of the most popular sports worldwide. Amazing athletes like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Carmelo Anthony have amazed NBA and basketball fans all over the world. Basketball was created as a humble game with a peach basket in 1891 by James Naismith. Most people would agree that the best basketball player of all time is Michael Jordan. But how did the game evolve? The Harlem Globetrotters helped the game grow in the 1920’s Before the Globetrotters were formed in 1927 by Abe Saperstein, basketball was mostly an irrelevant game. “Very small crowds fit into densely packed church gymnasiums to watch games” (Digital Harlem Blog). In 1902, basketball got a huge boost in national exposure when it allowed an African-American named Bucky Lew to play in a game (NBA Hoops Online). Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
Though Saperstein was born in London, England in 1902, he spent his childhood in Chicago and always having a fascination for basketball. After becoming the coach of the Giles Post semi-pro team, the team turned professional in 1926 and assumed the name the "Savoy Big Five". Under Saperstein's guidance, the team played in the famous Chicago's Savoy Ballroom, but in late 1926 three of the players, Inman Jackson, Lester Johnson, and Walter Wright got into a dispute with then manager Dick Hudson, and quit. But Saperstein had big plans; he and the three disgruntled players banded together with two new players and formed the Harlem Globetrotters. On January 7, 1927 Saperstein's Globetrotters played their first game in Hinckley Illinois and won handily, then the Globetrotters set off on a cross country tour in which they won 101 of 117 games, often by large margins. In the early years many of the people who attended the Globetrotters games had never interacted with people of African heritage. So Saperstein was in a sense integrating the entire country by spreading a black influence throughout the country. With these actions he began to lay the groundwork for the infusion of black players into mainstream basketball.
Backstory of Basketball Basketball has been played since 1891, and still continues to be played today as well. Basketball is an intriguing game played by 2 teams with 5 players from each team on the court at the same time. Basketball, as it started out in 1891 had no African American athletes in the sport. That was still going on, even as late as the 1950’s.
Alright, fantasy basketball fans time for my next NBA team preview. Today, I’ll be analyzing three players from the Los Angeles Lakers and discussing how they can benefit your fantasy teams in 2015-16. The Lakers are one of the NBA’s most decorated franchises, but these days they’ve lost their winning ways. As sports and recreation became integral in American everyday life, there was a problem in the north. It became too cold to play baseball and football outside, but it was wasn’t possible to play these sports inside as it just resulted in injuries to players and the facilities where they attempted to play them. Therefore, basketball was invented as a game where you couldn’t run with the ball and scoring was upright in hopes to decrease the amount of violence but also provide men with recreation in the winter. Soon, basketball just like cycling, football, prize fighting and baseball became a competitive sport and turned into a business where status and prowess become the significant. Since its creation in 1893, the sport of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in the United States. One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models.
After the NBL was formed other leagues started to form everywhere. Most of the early leagues barely lasted, maybe only a few weeks. The NBL only lasted 5 seasons. In 1902 the New England Leagues got a lot of publicity because they let a black man named Bucky Lew play in a game of basketball. Colleges started to mark the game of basketball, and sponsoring games. At first it was only a few colleges like, Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Columbia, Chicago, Utah, and the Navy. In these earlier games there were problems with injuries, because no fouling rules were in place. “In a 5 year time span many activist groups were trying to get the government to place restrictions on the sport” Bran said, they didn’t like how violent the game of basketball was, so they tried to get it banned, but that didn’t last very long. That restriction never came to past, because the president didn’t think that it was necessary to ban the sport. The Original Celtics were a team called the New York Celtics, the New York celtics started in 1914, but they ending due to World War I. After World War I a man named Jim Furey, and his brother Tom restarted the team. Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. On November 6, 1861 the great James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada to Mr. and Mrs. John and Margaret Naismith. As a child James wasn’t very successful in school but excelled in physical activates, this triggered him to drop out of school and become a lumberjack. Soon after this he realized that he needed to turn his life around, so he went back to school to receive a degree in physical education. He later earned a job at a local YMCA in Springfield and was immediately put in task of finding a way to keep men in shape during the winter seasons. After many unsuccessful attempts he finally decided on a sport in which the players must throw a soccer ball into a peach basket on either side of the gymnasium. So on December 21, 1891 the newly formed game known as basketball had its first official game, the final score 1-0. As time passed different basketball leagues were formed the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. People all around the world have favorite sports teams and they support them even if they are having a bad season. In the NBA, the best team is not getting enough credit for what they have completed in the league. The best teams show great teamwork, strong gameplans, and of course, win the NBA championship.
