It really making them soft All student strives for good grades but many of them don’t want to work for it. However, many kids in today society think that they don’t have to work just as hard as everyone else. Most student in today world think that if we are trying are best that should mean something, when they are getting graded on tasks. Giving effort should not be a main factor in grading, because it will devalue the grading system. Which bring me to my point in this problem, first one is students think they are giving full effort but how do you really know that. Second is show them the easy way out of what truly is important in today world. Third thing, it will hurt them in the long run. Just because you are giving effort does mean you are giving a good product. That’s the real truth that many students will learn in the real world. People don’t care how much effort you gave to give them a result. They only care about how good the product is. Hard work would lead to success if you really put the effort in to the problem. If teachers allow this, it will only hurt the students in the long run because soon they will expect an A just for showing up and not a B. Which make student lazy and not want to work hard to earn the grade but be given the grade just for showing up which is only have the battle. Ultimately, by these students tieing their self image to getting the highest possible grade it can lead them to some serious Problems, the students not learning to their full potential, and negatively affect their career. Society is convinced that smartness is measured on how well you take tests. Actual knowledge is how well you retain the information over a long period of time. Referring back to Howard Gardner and Benjamin Bloom’s The Learning Pyramid, an individual remembers 5% from a lecture, 10% from reading, 20% from audiovisual, 30% from demonstration, 50% from discussion, 75% from practicing doing the activity, and lastly you remember 90% of what you learn when you teach other people. It seems the grading system only gets in the way of students’ learning processes. The pressure of grades is simply a tool of power rather than an evaluation to see how students are doing. Removing the grading system will only bring benefits to the table.
Grades do motivate students to do better but, grades cause students to want to get a good grade instead of fully mastering the material. They look at school just trying to pass which promotes cheating on tests and homework. They also will choose the material that is the easiest and choose a class with a professor who doesn’t care to raise their GPA. School is supposed to be about learning and understanding new material to help gain knowledge and a new way of thinking.

I believe that to motivate students to do work, practice work needs to be worth more than 10% of a students’ grade. Ideally, I believe the grading scale should be closer to 75% knowledge, and 25% practice. I believe this would help students want to do their work because practice work is worth much more than 10%. If the students do not do any practice work, they can end up with a C, which in many cases is deemed average. Also, those who do their practice work well can use practice assignments to bring up bad test scores. Due to this, more students will do well on their practice work, therefore leading to better scores in tests because students are trying on practice work and they are doing work. Those on the school board may think that 75/25 would be too much weight on practice work, due to this I also think an 80/20 grading scale would be a good option. Seeing as students would still be getting more credit for their homework. The 90/10 grading system needs to be changed for Emma and for all the students at Austin High School in order to benefit them in the future, in both college and their future
Yes, grades are an effective means of motivating students to do their best work. If there were no grades why the students would like to work hard? Do not they want to enjoy luxury and comforts in their youth? Surely, students want to enjoy their youth with luxury and comforts. They can not judge themselves because they have no scale of judgment. It is the instructor only who judges the students comparatively and gives grades to them accordingly. In this way, by receiving their grades students recognize their positions in the class. If their positions came to be low, they then try to achieve higher positions by working hard because they want to achieve their goal of becoming great persons. As it is the nature of all the human beings that no one is ready to accept his weaknesses. Everyone sees his abilities only. Therefore, if students are given proper grades continually, they will be aware of their weaknesses and hence they will alter themselves accordingly by working hard.
Without anyone pushing students to the fullest extent of their comprehension in certain subjects, there will not be enough material for the educator to give a coherent grade, which results in giving a pupil an unearned mark.... ... middle of paper ... ... It will give such students “false feedback about their ability,” making them believe that what they are doing is proper, that it is the standard set of skills that everyone has, and that they will succeed in almost anything with the same attitude.
In my English class, the teacher would assign readings every class that we were supposed to analyze. Our teacher graded these assignments on whether or not we did it and because of this many students put very little effort into actually reading the material. At the end of the year there was a huge test where we had apply the skills we had developed throughout the year. Those who put effort into the homework assignments throughout the year found the test a natural extension of the skills they had been developing. On the other end those who had skipped the analysis were not able to perform well on the test.
But, in this day and age students act as if it's impossible. DPS fail to inform their students that failing is a real thing and it can happen to anyone. Students assume that if they put in little effort, and come to class they’ll pass. They don’t consider their actions, assignments, and homework. Students are oblivious to the fact that failing could make or break them. If DPS schools wanted to see a drastic increase in their students academics and a decrease in summer school attendees, they would threaten their students with failing. It sounds cruel, but it works. Failure motivates us to push ourselves until we are at where we want to be. I know first hand, I received my first “D” during my sophomore in my geometry class. I refused to let that get me down, and worked until I brought my grade up to an “A”. I didn’t let anything stand in my way, looking at that horrendous grade only made me want to try harder. What happens when students hear this new mode of grading and stop trying? What is the challenge of going to school and working hard, if they do not have to make sure they get all of their school work done to pass? Teachers will not need to try so hard to get their lecture through to their audience. Although allowing the no zero rule helps children in many ways, it hurts them in more ways. In society there are no grading scales, no one is going to give these young students an easy pass. If they cannot do what they are supposed to do in their career, then they will fail. These students need to understand the meaning of working hard to achieve in school, so they understand what it will be like with a job, or family. Most jobs run on a pass or fail scale. It is easy to think that changing the grading scale is what the students need, and that this will give parents what they are looking for to stop the children from dropping out of
“Researchers found that an approach on required rewards and consequences actually decrease children’s motivation to learn.” Do to stress that tests cause, children no longer take part in enhancing experiences for the joy of learning. When students aren’t driven to learn it can lead to dropping out of school, purposely flunking a test, and can even cause depression. Being motivated to learn in school, is probably the most important thing for anyone to success in life.
It is too much for the students to handle. Lastly, is that the students will not be tested on what they learned. Doing this keeps their mind in check. They will not remember if they just do one big project. Also doing this helps their grade a ton.
This placed much of the burden of recognizing academic talent on the high schools. Hindering a student’s performance with a bad grade in the middle of the year can make them give up for the rest of the year. Once a student has received a bad grade, they might lose faith in their academic ability. By giving up, a student does not reflect their academic ability and their bad grades are not based on what they learned.
