If we break down the human and its ability, or design, we can get very detailed when it comes to the physical parts; however, some parts like emotion are a little more abstract and can be objective. Because of this, great minds, science, and other sources have tried to nail down a permanent definition of happiness. Allowing other entities to define happiness, humans can fill the void of uncertainty. It allows for us general population to worry less and put less effort into what may be one of the driving points of our entire lives, birth to death. Some people will be fine with other people’s thoughts on happiness and how they should find happiness or be happy. Emotions are complex. This is not a dreadful thing though. It allows for more thought, thought that should take effort. We should want to be able to understand how things we interact with or think about making our mind and body feel a certain way. Without an understanding of ourselves, there would be chaos. To add a little more concrete information, we can look at how dopamine can affect our brain and how we feel. Dopamine acts as a reward system, as if a dog does a trick and it is fed a treat for completing that task. What this brings to our lives are goals. If we can release dopamine by completing or succeeding the goals we set for ourselves, it is possible to use that dopamine to be happy. Although we may not be able to make the dopamine affect us at a moment’s notice, it is the constant trying and willingness to push ourselves that can reach that happiness. What this means is that our present selves can bring happiness into our present lives and invest into our future selves. Usually, achievable goals will bring our lives to a better standing than we were at before. The goals may not be instant and it might take time, but our lives are not meant to be easy as it is. In the second semester of my sophomore year in college, I decided to lose weight and change my body composition. Thoreau tells us that “Happiness is like a butterfly” and we cannot reach it if we try to capture it, but rather, it will find us as it lands on our shoulder when we just live our lives (Than). Thoreau took some time out of his life to spend outdoors and away from immediate civilization. The adventure allowed for him to leave more materialistic things behind and live off the land.
