Despite Hamlet being a tragic play, Shakespeare incorporates numerous extensions of Hamlet’s character throughout it, including the element of sarcasm. His sarcasm is most often sparked by his contempt of either a certain subject or person, and is usually spoken in such a way that his remarks seem innocent. Hamlet’s sarcasm is first seen during his interaction with Horatio when the topic of the Queen’s remarriage following so closely behind King Hamlet’s funeral is brought up. He makes the statement, “The funeral baked meats, did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables” (Act 1, Scene 2, lines 180-181). When he is having his discussion with his mother, he can sense her view of his sanity decreasing and cries, “Ecstasy?My pulse as yours doth temperately keep time and makes as healthful music. It is not madness that I have uttered” in a desperate attempt to get her to accept his words about Claudius as the truth. What causes her to lose her faith in him is when he describes how he can see the ghost of his father when she cannot. Schizophrenia is associated with having hallucinations, “things a person sees, hears,...that no one else can” (“What is Schizophrenia?, 2). However, the audience knows that Hamlet is not the only one to have seen the Ghost because Horatio, Marcellus, and Barnardo saw it first and were the ones who told Hamlet about it in the first place. Also, schizophrenia is known to also create delusions, “beliefs that are not true or logical” (“What is Schizophrenia?, 2). This also does not relate to Hamlet as Claudius admits to feeling guilty for his “cursed hand...thicker than itself with his brother’s blood” (III.iii.44-45). The audience is given proof that both what the Ghost told Hamlet was the truth, and that the Ghost is not simply a figure of Hamlet’s imagination, as he would not have known about his father’s death being a murder had it been. He is mentally disturbed by the thought of his uncle killing his father to the point where he loses touch with sanity. Hamlet is a tragedy that will never have a straightforward answer as to if he faked being crazy or not. My belief is that Hamlet had in fact lost touch with reality. The slow decline of his mental health throughout lead me to believe he did go crazy, even if he might have been faking it at first. After seeing his father’s ghost, I believe he started acting like he had lost his mind to blame his future actions on the fact that he was crazy. “I plead guilty by reason of insanity,” is Hamlet’s plea if he was sitting in a modern courtroom. In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, it is evident that Hamlet himself is indeed out of his mind. The reader understands the reason for his anger and frustration, but how he “fixes” the situation is beyond a sane mind. To be fair, his madness deals more with emotional instability referred to as melancholy or madness than a person who is incoherent. A boy's streak of vengeance is not always merely Oedipal. Hamlet's revenge, and the situations that spur it, are not based on his love for his mother, but on the need to avenge his father's death. Although Hamlet is the only one who hears the ghost talk, others experience the sight. This proves that he does not subconsciously create the hallucination in order to rid his mother of her new lover. Once learning that his father was murdered, and that no one witnessed his death, Hamlet feels compelled to punish the killer. Even though the murderer is his mother's new husband, Hamlet acts to avenge his father's death, not out of jealousy for his mother's partner. Hamlet is very angry with Gertrude, his mother, for marrying so soon after her first husband's death. His fury is based solely on his mother's rapid wedding and the person whom she wed, not on Hamlet's sexual desires towards his mother. Although Hamlet may love his mother, his actions of revenge are based on his need to avenge Old Hamlet's untimely death.
Hamlet is arguably the most famous play written by the highly renowned English playwright, William Shakespeare--a man known in much of the western world as the father of english literature. Part of the reason for this title is for Shakespeare’s ability to take a character, and through a basic plot, transform said character into becoming something that many scholars have debated over for years. Hamlet in this play is this character; a character whose mental instability or sheer lack of perception has lead to countless debate and argument over the actual explanation for the characters behavior. Schizophrenia can be defined as a lasting mental disorder that forms a fundamental impediment in thought and emotion (as well as behaviour). This disorder can then lead to a lack of judgment in perception, and unusual actions and feelings, all in addition to an overall withdrawal from reality and a devolution of personal relationships to delusional perceptions of oneself and his surroundings--in all, schizophrenia is a mental disorder involving the breaking down of the mind and one’s grip on reality (National Library of Medicine). With the above definition, it may at first seem rash to criticize Hamlet and declare that he has Schizophrenia; however, once it is considered the varying degrees in which Schizophrenia can manifest itself, it no longer becomes such a farfetched thought. It must be contended then, that Hamlet is neither insane nor lazy, but merely a man who suffers from Schizophrenic-hallucinations; hallucinations that spiral up the plot into one focused primarily on Hamlet’s search for truth.
Right after Hamlet’s father dies he goes through a mourning phase and acts different than he normally does, but this is just an effect of seeing his dad’s ghost. The reader can make inference that he is not crazy when he sees the ghost the first time because his friends and the guards saw the ghost too. Hamlet's public persona is a facade he has created to carry out his ulterior motives. The outside world's perception of him as being mad is of his own design. Hamlet is deciding what he wants others to think about him. Polonius, a close confidant of the King, is the leading person responsible for the public's knowledge of Hamlet's madness. The idea that Hamlet is mad centers around the fact that he talks to the ghost of his dead father. He communicates with his dead father's ghost twice, in the presence of his friends and again in the presence of his mother. By being in public when talking to the ghost, the rumor of his madness is given substance.
At first, Hamlet feigns his madness; however, after his first kill, he pushes aside any rationale he has left and becomes bloodthirsty for revenge. Shakespeare subtly hints at some instability in Hamlet’s mind, even before he becomes aware of his father’s murder. Before Hamlet sees his father’s ghost, his father’s spirit begins to haunt his mind. Hamlet admits to Horatio, “My father-methinks I see my father” (1.2.184). This quote alone is evidence supporting the fact that Hamlet sometimes imagines the presence of his father, suggesting that his mind is becoming unstable.
Madness is a condition that is difficult to distinguish between true and false. As in the encounter of the ghost of Hamlet 's father with Hamlet, Hamlet is asked to avenge his father 's death. To accomplish this task in a less apparent manner, Hamlet decides to feign madness. In the long run, Hamlet truly does go insane. Consequently, his behavior thereafter is frequently unfathomable. William Shakespeare, the writer of the tragic play, Hamlet, leaves Hamlet 's sanity up to interpretation. Throughout Shakespeare 's Hamlet, Hamlet 's questionable madness is explored through his real madness, feigned actions, and the reactions of others towards his madness.
In act 3 scene 4 Hamlet sees his father’s ghost in his mother 's bedroom after just having murdered Polonius. Gertrude however cannot see the ghost when Hamlet tries to point it out, and she takes this as proof of Hamlet’s madness “This is the very coinage of your brain…” (3.4.135-139). However this is debatable proof, as some of the soldiers, and Horatio had seen the ghost before that point. He then drags out Polonius’s body to hide it, and the castle guards are sent to look for him. He continues to act mad during this time, furthering the belief that he really was mad (4.3.18-25). In response to this event Claudius sends Hamlet to England to be killed. Hamlet however escapes this fate, and heads back to his homeland. During the time he was away Ophelia had gone mad and had committed suicide, and Laertes had come back and swore revenge on Hamlet for what he had done to his family. This is when Hamlet’s madness appears to fade a little bit. Hamlet is shown talking normally to Horatio throughout the last section of the play, and once he finds out about Ophelia’s death he seemingly snaps back to reality, revealing he did care about her.
