The story of Hamlet William Shakespeare is about a young man suffering from mental illness after his father’s death. His father then later comes back as a ghost to tell Hamlet that he had been murdered by his brother; who had also married Hamlet’s recently widowed mother. Hamlet’s illnesses become more apparent through out the story. Shackspere tells the story with the use of sarcasm, suicidal tendencies, insanity, and procrastination.
Sarcasm is used in the play “Hamlet” to enlighten the story. It can help with the mood of the characters and helps to convey their feelings. One of most memorable quotes of sarcasm from act 1 was said by Hamlet, “The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables” (1.2 .180-181). Hamlet is clearly upset about his mother’s marriage to his uncle and he is being blunt about how quickly the marriage was arranged after his father’s death. In this moment there is a glimpse of the mental illness that was present in Hamlet’s psyche. Hamlet used sarcasm to explain his feelings towards the death and marriage. It contributes to the sassiness and conveys his annoyance towards the situation. “A little month, or ere those shoes were old with which she followed my poor father’s body.”(1.2.147-148) His animosity towards his mother shows through when he describes how his she had not broken in her shoes for the funeral by the time the wedding occurred. Hamlet shows anger towards his uncle as well when he describes his actions. “As he guzzles down his German wine, the musicians make a ruckus to celebrate his draining another cup” (1.4.11-13). Ophelia’s life may have been saved if Hamlet had killed Claudius earlier as well. The story of Hamlet can be seen as eccentric; never knowing if Hamlet was truly mad will always be a mystery of the story. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was different from all of his other writings. It was much darker and much less romantic. Hamlet’s vengeance was present in the beginning but seemed to turn into enjoyment as his illness progressed. He was seen as insane but most of his actions were too thought out for a crazy man. Hamlet may have been indecisive, but his character had many strong morals that were kept throughout the whole story. His procrastination had gotten to the best of him, making his death much deserved.

One might say that Hamlet could be linked to many news articles today, specifically, consider the case featuring the Bever teens. These teens really didn’t have a motive behind their actions. Hamlet didn’t have a specific motive other than revenge, and the Bever brothers possibly had the same mind set. Maybe their parents didn’t treat them fairly, or possibly they struggled with coping with these parent struggles, just like Hamlet. He was still coping with his father’s death and his mom got over it pretty quickly. That could be a reason why Hamlet was out for revenge. Hamlet came across as a confused man. Have you ever been so upset with something but done nothing about because it makes someone else happy? Or maybe just picked on yourself for just talking and not acting? Even thought that death would be much better than suffering through life? Many times throughout the play Hamlet, the protagonist, Hamlet, gives a soliloquy. These soliloquies hint towards themes that Shakespeare, the author, wants us to learn. Each of the first three Acts has a soliloquy that has a major theme of the play in it. In Acts I, II, And III of the play Hamlet, we are given three major themes of the play.

Old Hamlet is killed by his brother Claudius. Only two months after her husband’s death a vulnerable Gertrude marries her husband’s brother Claudius. Gertrude’s weakness opens the door for Claudius to take the throne as the king of Denmark. Hamlet is outraged by this, he loses respect for his mother as he feels that she has rejected him and has taken no time to mourn her own husband’s death. One night old Hamlets ghost appears to prince Hamlet and tells him how he was poisoned by his own brother. Up until this point the kingdom of Denmark believed that old Hamlet had died of natural causes. As it was custom, prince Hamlet sought to avenge his father’s death. This leads Hamlet, the main character into a state of internal conflict as he agonises over what action and when to take it as to avenge his father’s death. Shakespeare’s play presents the reader with various forms of conflict which plague his characters. He explores these conflicts through the use of soliloquies, recurring motifs, structure and mirror plotting.
With his thinking mind Hamlet does not become a typical vengeful character. Unlike most erratic behavior of individuals seeking revenge out of rage, Hamlet considers the consequences of his actions. What would the people think of their prince if he were to murder the king? What kind of effect would it have on his beloved mother? Hamlet considers questions of this type which in effect hasten his descision. After all, once his mother is dead and her feelings out of the picture , Hamlet is quick and aggressive in forcing poison into Claudius' mouth. Once Hamlet is certain that Claudius is the killer it is only after he himself is and and his empire falling that he can finally act.
Hamlet is a paradox; he is a perplexing character that throughout the play has more to show. Hamlet is a person of contradictions he is inquisitive and profound yet indecisive. The experiences Hamlet goes through led to dramatic changes in his character. In the beginning we are introduced to a young man who is mourning for the death of his father and struggling with the sudden marriage of his mother to his uncle. Hamlet faces the dilemma of wanting to avenge his father’s death and suppressing his intense emotions in order to calculate a plan.
