In the play The Tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare the main character, Hamlet, has a relationship with Ophelia, yet he sends mixed messages to her throughout the play. Hamlet has recently lost his father and suspects that foul play was involved. In his plot to avenge his father, his personality changes towards people especially towards Ophelia. The way Hamlet acts towards Ophelia shows that he acts like he never really cared about Ophelia and he was just using her but in the end when he finds out Ophelia is dead he shows he does care.
In Act III, Scene 1 Hamlet tells Ophelia “I loved you not”, confessing that he never really loved her. As soon as Hamlet kills Polonius he is sent away to England, to be killed without his knowledge. Ophelia goes crazy and later while she is picking flowers off a tree, the branch breaks off and she falls into the swamp. She just lets herself drown herself and by the time hamlet comes back, he finds out Ophelia is dead by running into her procession. Hamlet says he loved Ophelia, which goes on with did he REALLY love her or did he just say he did. Dr. Ray says “his behaviour to Ophelia "discloses an interesting feature in mental pathology”(Deighton). This means that the way Hamlet acts towards Ophelia may have impacted his mental state or vice versa.
As you can see, Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia can be interpreted as him saying that he likes but then says he doesn’t. After Hamlet finds out that Ophelia is dead, he announces that he was really in love with her and he is depressed. Shakespeare makes their relationship complicated that it makes people think “does Hamlet actually care about Ophelia?” Hamlet in fact did love Ophelia yet his plan to act crazy made him move away from her and ruin the
