What is Halsey talking about here? Has she seen a ghost? Is she haunted by a mythical and soulless wisp of air? It's possible, of course. However, it's not the case here. Halsey is not presenting horror fables in her music, she is telling a story. Music is not only a remarkable story-telling method, but it is also a poetic way to do it.
The story Halsey tells in her song 'Ghost' is not of a fictional horrific being. Her story is of a lover. What is a ghost? A ghost is someone you knew, but they have become manifested now. A ghost is not the person you once knew because they died with their legacy. The 'ghost' is the boy that broke Halseys' heart. The boy she thought she knew but became manifested. He haunts her because of the pain that caused her, because he is not who he once was. Halsey takes on the title of a storyteller simply through song and her music. She tells the tale metaphorically by addressing he who has hurt her as a phantom, an unreal image that she can no longer fathom.
