What Was Halloween Originally Called? Halloween is ancient, once religious, holiday that is observed annually on the last day of October. Halloween has a rich history and has been linked to many different cultural heritages over the years. There has been a lot of debate regarding the origins and the original name of the holiday. In order to discuss the original name of Halloween, one must look to the past for clues to the origin of the holiday itself. What Was the First Halloween Called? It is widely accepted by historians that the first instance of Halloween can be found over 2,000 years ago, with the Celt people. Early Scottish and Irish historical documents mention a celebration known as Samhain, that was observed at the same time Halloween is observed today. The Celts lived off the land, and with any culture that lives off the land, a certain belief in magic and gods is required. The Celtic people appointed priests known as Druids. These Druids were believed to magic wielders that could divine the future on certain nights, such as Samhain. The Druids were responsible for predicting the upcoming harshness of the winter and helping the Celts to prepare to survive the cold winters. A large bomb fire was built in the middle of the settlement, and families would gather around the bomb fire and celebrate the last day of the Celtic year. The Celts would take the night of Samhain and celebrate as well as honour the ones that they lost the previous winter. The veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, which led many people to dawn costumes in order to blend in with any potential ghosts that might have returned to possess a living body and extract revenge on those that might have done them harm. Well the day started off with me waking up and walking to the bathroom to take a shower, as soon as the turned the water on I realized I had left my shower and rather than turning off my shower I stayed in because the warmth of the hot water was too seductive for me to get out and get my towel. In the shower I had my usual thoughts about life, death, and comebacks to old arguments. Afterword I got out of my shower and reached for my toothbrush, which was located in a cupboard behind the toilet, but I grabbed at it too quickly and it fell in the toilet. I stood over my toilet for about five minutes just staring at my toothbrush in the toilet not believing what just happened, after that I started blaming myself for being too impatient. When I was done feeling sorry for myself I went into my room in search of another toothbrush but unluckily I couldn’t find one, so I had to go walk to the local store at around 7:30 in search of a toothbrush. While searching for a replacement toothbrush I realized that not that many people were in the store, I had always thought that stores were busiest in the morning and evening but apparently that’s not true. Once I got my new toothbrush I finished brushing, got dressed and went to catch the 11 to the Transit Center.
