The Celebration of Hanukkah
When a person hears the word Hanukkah two things come to mind. First thing may be on how to pronounce the word the right way. The second things is the presents your get everyday, especially if that person is a little kid. Hanukkah is a celebration of the mighty war the Maccabees won over the Greeks to take back the Holy Land. The Menorah that is used to celebrate this holiday represents the seven days the Holy Temple was in use. The gift giving and the candle lighting are all in representation of the fight for the Holy land.
Hanukkah celebrates two miracles.The 2nd century BCE victory of a small, greatly outnumbered and out-armed army of Jews, known as the “Maccabees,” over the mighty Greek army that occupied the Holy Land. These two traditions are called the High Holidays. Rosh Hashanah encapsulates four major and interconnected themes, which are: The Jewish New Year, The Day of Shofar Blowing, The Day of Remembrance, and The Day of Judgment (Layton, 2014). This is the most significant time in the Jewish year, as it marks the chance for repentance and forgiveness in the eyes of God. During the High Holidays, Jews cleanse their soul and get the chance to start fresh with an unburdened conscience and the intention of doing better in the coming year (Layton, 2014).
By giving back through your words and actions, the holiday can be a very graceful and godly time when individuals can reflect and try to make themselves a better person. These holidays allow spiritual growth, which is one of the most vital aspects of the Jewish religion. Without an absolute understanding of gratitude, faith, and humbling yourself before God, this religion is not truly embraced, by embracing these aspects the religion can be illuminated in all ways and seen as one of the most beautiful parts of life.

The article that I read was about US District Judge Andrew S. Hanen. He had stopped plans to protect around four million undocumented immigrants from deportation and giving work permit; he copied a promise made by Justice Department attorneys that “nothing would happen” before his order. Boniface. In the 7th century St. Boniface travelled to Thuringia, Germany to preach the Gospel. Prior to Christmas, St. Boniface came upon a group of pagans intent on performing a sacrifice at the foot of a large oak tree. The worship of trees was common among pagans at that time. This sacrificial rite angered the missionary and he attempted to dissuade them from committing the act. During this altercation, St. Boniface is said to have cut down an oak tree that was intended to be used in a sacrifice to the god, Odin. According to legend, the pagans, in awe of the swift destruction of the oak, then asked him what they should do instead to celebrate Christmas. Noting a small fir tree amongst the debris of the fallen oak, St. Boniface asked each of them to take a fir tree home with them. He turned a fir tree upside down and used its triangular shape to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The newly-converted pagans began to refer to the fir tree as “God’s Tree”. By the 12th century the tradition of hanging a fire tree upside down in homes throughout the Christmas season was practiced throughout Central Europe, from Krakow to the Carpathian Highlands, and was seen as a symbol of Christianity.
