During the Honor’s college conference on undergraduate engagement, I attended the Habitat for Humanity session and the health care session. Both of these were very intriguing and I fairly enjoyed them both. Although they were equally enjoyable, I must say that the Habitat for Humanity session was the utmost interesting of the two. I felt it was a very worthy cause for those in need and living in unsafe conditions. The nonprofit organization allows families within a certain income have a new home built with no interest rates and the organization will work with families on their payments. Habitat for Humanity brings simple and affordable homes to low-income individuals. On the other hand, we were required to attend one skills session of our …show more content…
Getting involved in our community allows us the opportunity to meet new people and have a greater understanding of all cultures that you may encounter. Community engagement can assist one in their academic learning and create connections with professionals that can help you establish a career. There’s hundreds of thousands of nonprofit organizations in the world, so why not be involved in one? Organizations like these are what turn the world into an overall better place. I think it is our duty to help those less fortunate around us. The conference made me realize that I, along with other college students, should take the initiative to be more involved in my community since the slightest occurrence could cause the biggest impact. Also, it made me realize that reaching your goals is not easy, it takes time and you should never quit. If college students all over the world would step up and become more involved in the community, we could make all the difference. We are the generation that influences others and we have the power to persuade others to be involved as well. The younger generation looks up to us and we should set a positive example for them. Seeing college students being so interested in volunteering could cause younger people want to do so as …show more content…
You could impact someone’s life just by volunteering your time and efforts. I also learned that no matter what your goal is, do not give up, over time you will find your way. Organizations appreciate your volunteer work more than you realize. Finding an organization that truly interests you is best to pick up involvement in because you will enjoy your volunteer time and you can have an educational benefit as
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicate to building homes for low-income individuals. This organization requires that potential homeowners assist in the building of their home or others to reduce the financing cost of homeownership. This paper focuses on the percentage of property tax revenue, two arguments in favor, and two arguments property tax breaks for Habitat of Humanity homeowner, and case resolution.
...ittle could actually mean a lot to those who appreciate it. I also learned that doing something for others could be really fun. Volunteering with the VFW also increased my social skills. By working at the hamburger fest I got to work with other people and that increased my social skills. Doing voluntary work does not have to be boring. If you volunteer with friends or family it could not only benefit you by having fun with people you know, but it could also benefit others as well.
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Knowing that I can positively impact individuals in my community and in other countries makes me feel like I have grown maturely and am able to understand what needs to be done to make a difference to
My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. As a hispanic american I have been provided the opportunity of experiencing life from two different viewpoints which has provided me with various life lessons that aided in my development in becoming a successful and well- rounded
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it. Not only was I able to teach her math and reading comprehension skills, but how to carry herself as a smart and extraordinarily capable young lady. In return, she taught me patience and how sometimes you just need to approach a problem differently to see the
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
Through the UNCW involvement carnival I learned about different community groups, I became interested in new clubs, and I was able to get tones of free stuff. Community is important in the life of every individual. It is important to become a part of something bigger than your self. While at the involvement carnival I got to talk with a group of people from the Scotts Hill Baptist Church student ministry. Every week there is a program called Echoloud for college
Moreover, a person can connect with people they may have not got the chance to. In particular, people who volunteer are more than likely to encounter areas of a society and career options they would have never thought of being available to them (Vale). Volunteering opens up different doors and opportunities that wouldn’t have been before. Continued, a volunteer can learn knowledge about different career paths and what they entail. For example, volunteers may experience and benefit from gaining knowledge on topics such as health, environment, and women’s issues (Sinha). A volunteer can gain experience of different types of jobs and learn more about different careers from first hand experience. Furthermore, a person met through volunteering may help you get a job in their field. For instance, when you volunteer with someone they get to know a lot about you and can serve as a reference of your character (Greene). Volunteering experiences help connect a person to others that can help connect you to different career paths. Volunteering is not only effective, but it's a good way to meet people and develop social
A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.
Volunteering is an important contributor to our society. It is also a great opportunity to learn different skills, especially young people, and they will become a part of who you are. Your future employers will thank you for it, as will any college or university that you decide to apply too. It is also a perfect way for everyone to meet different people and experience different things. Volunteering not only actively will help people; it also helps the environment. Most of all, it allows you to become a better person for what you have
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.

I am able to help those in need while being involved within the community. It is also a way for me to test the waters with my career goals. Throughout the many years of volunteering, it has allowed me to grow to be an altruistic and empathetic person. I have made connections and friendships as I volunteer. As a high school student and a frequent volunteer, I have been using a planner and mastered how to manage my time efficiently. Along with time management, I learned that sometimes I am not capable of doing everything; I now know how to say “no” to certain events. Because of volunteering, I have gained a lot of leadership skills to be a leader. From volunteering my communication skills, and social skills have improved. I can now address a crowd without fear, have eye contact and communicate
Over the summer I was able to spend several weeks at Union City Elementary School as a volunteer counselor. Through volunteer counseling, I provided elementary campers as well as special needs students with a fun filled week at camp. I like helping others, because I feel that volunteer work builds a stronger community. Coming from a strong small community, I have learned that having pride in your community is something that is well worth it in life. Throughout my summers volunteer service, I have learned how to be humble, but also how to have confidence. Volunteering has taught me a sense of independence, which is an important character trait for any college student to have. Patience, being able to understand someone different than you and time management are also skills that I have acquired through my volunteer work. I feel that through those experiences, I was prepared to
