What is HIV/AIDS?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that your body can’t get rid of. This virus sits in your body and attack your immune system and essential virus fighting cells. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the final stage of HIV infection. At this point of HIV people have badly damaged immune systems, which put them at risk for other disease and infections.
HIV/AIDS burst on to the scene in the 1980’s and was originally thought to only affect homosexual males. That myth was debunked a few short years later as the virus started to affect people from all walks of life. At the time the FDA only had one drug for treatment and patients wanted something different. These patients pooled their resources together and paid local entrepreneurs to supply them with drugs not yet approved by the FDA. These operations were called buyers clubs. These buyers clubs provided drugs to patients that prolonged their life span longer than the drug the FDA provided.
