Year after year people all over the world set a goal for themselves to get in better shape. That goal comes along with the plans to workout. Some people make the decision to buy weights and other equipment to workout at home while others choose to get a gym membership. With a new gym membership comes a new experience. New experiences are often frightening. Going to the gym for the first time however, can be one of the most intimidation moments of a person’s life. One of the reasons the first experience can be so intimidating are the fit people working out there. All the name brands being worn make the gym feel more like an advertisement rather than real life. For example, the countless name brand shoes bring a new sense of vulnerability. Seeing multiple people wear shoes with names such as Nike and Adidas as though they were part of an established uniform for the gym that was not mentioned makes the feeling of being an outsider that much stronger. Shortly after those feelings bring forward questions about those shoes. Are they truly better than the generic brand of running shoes found in Walmart? Are they worth the money? Does anyone really care what shoes someone else wears when they work out? In that instance, the answer to all those questions feel like a definite yes. When the courage comes to look past the shoes, the rest of the outfits look just as professional. Women wearing complete outfits from places like Lululemon or Fabletics, places that hardly cross the average person’s mind outside of the gym, make newbies feel just as unprepared as the shoes do. Looking at the wide variety of high priced outfits, the concern of being too casual for the environment quickly develops in the mind. The people are not the only intimidating aspect in this unfamiliar environment
