Year after year people all over the world set a goal for themselves to get in better shape. That goal comes along with the plans to workout. Some people make the decision to buy weights and other equipment to workout at home while others choose to get a gym membership. With a new gym membership comes a new experience. New experiences are often frightening. Going to the gym for the first time however, can be one of the most intimidation moments of a person’s life. One of the reasons the first experience can be so intimidating are the fit people working out there. All the name brands being worn make the gym feel more like an advertisement rather than real life. For example, the countless name brand shoes bring a new sense of vulnerability. Seeing multiple people wear shoes with names such as Nike and Adidas as though they were part of an established uniform for the gym that was not mentioned makes the feeling of being an outsider that much stronger. Shortly after those feelings bring forward questions about those shoes. Are they truly better than the generic brand of running shoes found in Walmart? Are they worth the money? Does anyone really care what shoes someone else wears when they work out? In that instance, the answer to all those questions feel like a definite yes. When the courage comes to look past the shoes, the rest of the outfits look just as professional. Women wearing complete outfits from places like Lululemon or Fabletics, places that hardly cross the average person’s mind outside of the gym, make newbies feel just as unprepared as the shoes do. Looking at the wide variety of high priced outfits, the concern of being too casual for the environment quickly develops in the mind. The people are not the only intimidating aspect in this unfamiliar environment

My teammates would cry and complain and quit. They could never see the appeal, and it was not until I took a weightlifting class during my freshman year that I found people who did; but they were all boys. For the first few weeks in the class, I continued to hid behind cardio machines and two pound weights, afraid to venture across an invisible barrier to the free weight section, bustling with sweaty boys in an assortment of Nike and Adidas. While other girls in my class sat texting on the recumbent bicycles, spouting gossip, I hovered closer and closer to the boy’s club, as I had dubbed them, rotating between weight stations. Then, on unexpected Friday afternoon, after an hour of listening to mindless drivel about fad diets and fake eyelashes, I breached the invisible line separating me from who I wanted to be. The gym is a place where a typical American college student goes to work out their bodies. Based on the fact that I personally could be considered a gym rat, a stereotypical name for someone who spends a lot of time in the work out area. This is partially by choice being on the swim team requires the strength training equipment that is available to our disposal in the gym. While I have been to the gym many times I haven’t really taken the time to take in the other people around me. Within this ethnographic exercise I will explore the college gym norms within Roger Williams University.
People often go through their life working-out and going to the gym to get “buff.” For ninety-five percent of Americans that do work out, few can say that they have pushed themselves as hard as possible, but I have the distinct, and often painful, pleasure of knowing that there is another way to work out. When it comes to choice of where to workout it is a complete personal preference. Some people do not like the thought of people staring at them or watching them workout because they are not at the place they wish to be at yet. This is only one other thing that sets people in this discourse community apart from themselves. In some instances, this can become a disadvantage for the person pushing towards a specific goal. Certain goals can be pushed to the side or completely forgotten about because of the discomfort people feel placing themselves in a place like a gym for the first time.
With America’s obesity rate on the rise a CrossFit gym that welcomes beginners, thoroughly teaches and explains each exercise and can offer a group atmosphere that’s welcoming to individuals who have never worked out before could help decrease the obesity rate. The group aspect of CrossFit is beneficial because it’s a motivator to keep attending workouts and to reach the goals you have personally set. Attending a CrossFit gym could also be a motivator because not only is the coach pushing them to get through the workout but the other members of the class are pushing each

But what makes people buy the name brand Nike? They have great advertisement. I love to watch Nike commercials; they appeal to me as an athlete. The commercials show the inner fight in people, breaking records, becoming a stronger person, being the best you, and being the best athlete; you can be overcoming anything. I find their advertisement to be very inspiring and motivational. The Nike slogan ‘Just Do It’ plastered on so many products inspire others to get out and ‘Just Do It,' no hesitation. Nike tries to appeal to you to buy their products by placing their apparel on professional athletic. Everyone knows Lebron James he has many young athletes that look up to him and want to be just like him. What do they see Lebron James wearing? Nike apparel, for the kids that want to be just like him, they want what he has. So they want the Nike look. For me personally, I see Nike products and logos at just about all sporting events, which is a great strategy for the business.
Has anybody here ever walked into a shoe store looking for a running shoe? You were probably dazed and confused because there were just so many different brands and styles to choose from. Now a days, shoe stores stock their running sections with different brands and styles. If you are one of those people who has not been shoe shopping in years, then prepared to be shocked. Technology and designs of running shoes have changed drastically. Running shoes are better than ever now, due to these changes. Also, with all the different name brands such as Asics, Brooks, New Balance, Nike and others, you can assure yourself your are paying for a quality product.
There are as many brands as there is ants in the world, but the two brands that pop out are adidas and nike. Those two brands have been going head to head for ages to see who is the better brand. It’s been tested, compared, and debated which brand is better. Whether it’s the quality of the materials or the cost of it, the debate is ongoing. Both brands have been fighting for the top ever since they were both created and I don’t blame them it’d be fantastic to be the best brand in the world. When Nike and adidas are contrasted, it becomes clear that the Adidas brand are better for the overall consumer and enhances sport performance than Nike.
The gym where I train and workout, the Dubuque Martial Arts Group, is a place where I know who I am. It is a place I can go to escape my problems for a while and release some stress. It's not the actual physical building, but rather the events that have occurred there over the years. It's where I have formed some of my closest friendships. It is the place I have invested years of hard work for many of my accomplishments. To some it may seem odd that a place associated with sweat, blood and physical pain mean so much to someone. However, in my eyes it's almost like a second home.
Some might argue that Adidas might be better than the previous brand, it depends, each individual has their opinion, and they might not be able to explain why the prefer one over the other. It seems people’s preference is based on the type of advertisement, and the style of clothes, and customers tend to be loyal to the chosen brand during their life. Adidas is a German company, which is competing with the American Nike.
For a lot of younger people, this is important. Younger generations want to have articles of clothing that are “in style” and this includes what they wear on their feet. It seems as though sneakers that are more colorful and have a pattern are the sneakers that are most popular but also the most expensive. Consumers must weigh their priorities such as the design and price while buying sneakers. The excitement someone feels while shopping for new running shoes comes from all the numerous options he or she has while looking.
