The number one priority for any student or teacher while attending our school system has to be public safety. Students and teachers have to exist in a safe learning environment. Today, in public school systems, our governments’ direct principals, and administration to ensure an emergency plan is in place, to carry out immediately, if the need arises, to protect all that are enrolled. Public safety has to extend beyond our secondary system and into our post-secondary educational facilities, protecting students and faculty members at all times. There should be no swaying from what is permitted on campus, in terms of firearms. In addition, our campuses are crowded thus; their misuse could be deadly. The author of this essay will argue against individuals having firearms in one’s possession on college and university campuses, with a strong focus on three major points in support of my view that firearms are not to be in one’s possession: having them on campus would create additional risks for students and professors, making their environments less safe, carrying hidden firearms would take away from a healthy learning environment, and the potential risks and/or effects of firearms in a crowded college …show more content…

Imagine how uneasy and uncomfortable one would be if they thought they were in class and another student or professor had a loaded firearm on them? The person with such a loaded firearm could be sitting next to them. In college, classroom students should feel open to express themselves, as many topics can be very controversial. If firearms were permitted on campuses students would feel restricted and possibly be in fear that another person would retaliate. It could be as simple as an open discussion in a college dorm, if firearms were permitted, students could feel that they would not be able to express themselves openly to ideas, as that fear of another person carrying a firearm would be present. In response to surveys, most responders would say “NO” to allowing colleges and university students to have firearms in their possession. The campus group “Students for Gun Free Schools” stated that “94 % of Americans do not think that regular citizens should be allowed to bring their guns onto college campuses”.
