Khushi Shah Mrs. Johnston AP Language 5 October, 2017 The Scarlet Letter Committing any type of crime and keeping guilt inside yourself will only lead a person into destruction. Anyone who keeps guilt inside themselves will only be killed by it day by day. It will also affect their physical and mental health drastically. The text “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne shows the effect of concealing sin. In the story, Hester Prynne is young and beautiful women who committed adultery with town’s minister, Reverend Dimmesdale. Her punishment was to wear a red "A" letter on her dress to disgrace her. However, Dimmesdale does not confess his sin and has to endure ceaseless guilt until the day of his demise. The guilt he is hiding in his heart truly destroys him. The text says “Or,-can we not suppose it? -guilty as they may be, retaining, nevertheless, a zeal for God’s glory and man’s welfare, they shrink from displaying themselves black and filthy in the view of men; because, thenceforward, no good can be achieved by them; no evil of the past be redeemed by better service.” (Chapter 10 Page 123) This quote demonstrates that he is too frightened to accept his guilt because he still wants to remain as a minister and does not want to lose his reputation in front of the Puritan community. The decision he makes not tell his sin to the Puritan community literally destroys him.
