Guiding children’s behaviour is an essential aspect of educating or caring for young children. The two biggest challenges that children normally experiences at their young age are ability to control their own behaviour and understanding acceptable behaviour (Australian Government, 2006). This paper describes about the case study of 4 years old girl Ashley’s inappropriate behaivour problems (e.g., getting disappointment, impatient and refusing to accept the failure), difficulties in following instruction, and physical aggression (e.g., kicking and punching other children) which are common in preschool (Conway, 2009). At this stage, the child’s behaviour is also associated with Bronfenbrenner’s “bi-directional influences” (Paquette & Ryan 2015). For example, the parents may affect child’s behaviour and beliefs; however, the child’s behaviour also affects the belief and behaviour of her parents. Curriculum, teaching strategies and resources play main role in addressing children’s behaviour in learning environment (Conway, 2009). Implementing the appropriate strategies and developing positive relationship between educator, parents and other significant adult is very important for the child to understand a sense of belonging, identity and able to recognize herself as significant and valued (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], 2014). Proactive and Reactive strategies can be utilized in guiding the child’s behaviour. The reactive approaches can be implemented after the child’s inappropriate behaviour that helps her to understand about ‘punishments’ and endeavor to stop her inappropriate behaviour (Conway, 2009). This behaviour framework helps to identify the purpose of aggressive, social withdrawn and depression of the child’s inappropriate behaviour, and to support educators, parents and other preschool personnel to develop interventions to address her behaviour. It also focuses on recognizing cognitive, emotional and environmental factors that contributes to both non-occurrence and occurrence of her targeted behaviour (Conway, 2009). For example, as the child is not ready to wait for her turn/ failure and ends with upset, in this situation, the child’s behaviour might escalate if she learns that the inappropriate behaviour could ruins her enjoyment of the ball game. The framework helps to identify the relationship between the child’s inappropriate behaviour, and the incidents before and after which triggers her behaviour to occur again (Porter, 2007). The Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) mainly deals with multi-method learning, problem-solving, child- centered and collection of data, this process can be conducted by observing and recording the behaviour (Conway, 2009).
