STUDY AREA
The Guhai dam is located on Guhai River near Village Khandhol in Himmatnagar taluka of district Sabarkantha. The Latitude and Longitude of the dam are 23’42’00” N and 73’3’24”E,respectively.
Its purpose are irrigation and flood control. The catchment area of the Guhai River at the dam site is 422 sq. km. The dam was completed in the year 1990. The FRL and HFL of the dam are at a level of 173.00 m and 173.77 m respectively. The dead storage and live storage capacity of the reservoir are 5.30 and 57.04 MCM,respectively.
Under guhai project right bank canal is 21 km long which passing through 31 villages of himmatnagar taluka and by this canal 7111 ha area is irrigated.
From field observation, satellite data analysis and schemes implemented following observations are highlighted:
• The watershed is characterized as forested/woodland. • Significant increase in the area under very good vegetation cover. Moderate to good vegetated area as been turned to very good vigour type, a healthy symbol of watershaded development.
• Tremen dous increase in spatial distribution of block plantation (horticulture/forest), also improved pastureland cultivation in dry lands. Crop area has remained the same over years (15.38% and 15.48%).
• Good response in the live stock management.
• There is still scope to improve the crop lands (alluvium derived soils) by adopting new farming techniques and water conservation measures.
• Dryland could be further impro...

..., the following recommendations are made :

• Removing obstructions to the flow such as weeds , bushes and other vegetation from the stream at regular interval from main canal and distributary canals.

• If the water supplied to the cultivators is assessed on area basis , the cultivators have a tendency to use excessive water , by adopting the volumetric assessment of water is controlled.

• The distribution of water to the farmers should be managed properly by using some kind of rotation system such as wara bandi.

• The farmers should be trained and educated through courses organized regularly about economic use of water and methods of application of water such as sprinkler irrigation and drip irrigation.

• Proper arrangement for the measurement of irrigation water used by the farmers should be made to facilitate the collection of water charges from the farmers.
