The materials that the Group A participants will receive will include videos of petty crimes and traffic violations, photographs of crime scenes and arrests, and accounts of people who committed crimes and their explanations on why they did it. The materials will include information on various types of crimes from shoplifting and indecent exposure to armed robbery and first-degree murder. Several types of criminal offences and misdemeanors will be included as it is important to expose the participants to different types of crimes, specifically to the types of crime not encountered by the participants in everyday life, e.g. armed robbery, in order to establish how a prolonged exposure to the information on criminal activity and the accounts …show more content…

However, those changes are not expected to be homogenous towards all of the types of crime. It is expected that the exposure will result in either no changes to the attitudes to serious crimes, such as first-degree murder, or slight negative changes. Attitudes towards property crimes and thefts are expected to change slightly and it is expected that the changes in the attitudes towards those crimes will be positive. Furthermore, it is expected that attitudes towards petty crimes, such as shoplifting and jaywalking, will change significantly and those changes in the attitudes will be positive. As the number of the sample is established, it is expected that the degrees of freedom of the research will be between 38 and 48. The alpha level for the research is 0.5. Taking into consideration the established degrees of freedom and the alpha level of 0.5, the critical value is expected to be either 2.042 or 2.000 (Gerstman, 2016). The confidence level that the null hypothesis is correct will be at 95%. The collected data will be analyzed with the use of Microsoft Excel.
If the proposed research shows significant results, positive correlation between regular exposure to crime and neutral attitudes towards some types of the criminal activity will be established. The obtained results could be used to better address the problem of high rates of petty crimes by proposing interventions for petty offenders.
