Perspective of Grendel
Grendel, the beast conceived by a pair of monsters born of Cain, one of the thousand forms of evil, truly evil or misunderstood? Grendel is typically seen as an evil creature, but is he? Throughout this essay I will tell my perspective of Grendel and rather it has changed or not.
Initially, my perspective of Grendel was that he was a fiend derived from hell. I felt this way because it seemed he was focused on murdering all the people in the town while destroying all remains of happiness. For example the first time he murdered men in the harot line 40 page 34 states “To his lair, delighted with his night’s slaughter.” In the epic Grendel was always described as being happy and almost excited when it came to killing the men in the harot. For instance, it seemed as though Grendel would always watch them celebrate and get mad because of their happiness, which then he would kill them later that night. An example being how the harot stood empty for twelve winters, because the people were afraid to celebrate because they knew that’s when he targeted them the most.
