The house stood between Broadway and Fourth Avenue, and it looked like all the other New York brownstones. It was narrow-fronted, with a high stoop. A formal parlor opened into a narrow hall, with the dining room at the rear. The master bedroom and nursery were one floor up, with three more bedrooms one level higher. In contrast to the other houses, however, it had a deep porch, or piazza, at the rear of the third floor level. It had been a bedroom before the Roosevelts tore out the wall and made it an open-air playroom. The house had been a wedding present from Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt, or CVS, to his son and daughter-in-law.

Lewiston, Idaho, once an important port for miners traveling in search of gold, is now a town of about 30,000 people. Few of the people who live in the Lewis-Clark Valley speak of its over one hundred year history. However, there are still parts of the community where one can explore and see the age of the town. Downtown Lewiston is one of a few areas where people can go exploring. They wander the streets, admiring the buildings that stand proudly above them. One building in particular ties a unique history into the downtown area. Morgan’s Alley stands at the corner of Main Street and D Street, overlooking the cars and people passing by. On the outside, it looks like an ordinary, older building. On the inside, it holds secrets of the past and possibly a ghost.

Found in both articles is the way in which the New Women emerged in society. Scott’s chapter examines how the publicity and social construction of the Gibson Girl played an influential role on the daily lives of the women who viewed her, while Sklar’s article explores how Hull House played as a tool to socially and economically integrate women into society.
Informally, Girls Inc. was started in 1864 in Connecticut, for daughters of working class mill families (girlsinc.org, 2014). This club was an informal gathering place, a bright spot in girls’ lives during the Great Depression, where they could learn sewing skills, make friends, and connect with mentors (girlsinc.org). It was feelings of belonging, increased self worth, and a home away from home, that was the driving force behind the effort to gather 19 clubs in the New England area to become the Girls Club of America in 1945, a name that would last ten years (girlsinc.org).
Addams, whose father was an Illinois state senator and friend of Abraham Lincoln, graduated in 1881 from Rockford College (then called Rockford Women’s Seminary). She returned the following year to receive one of the school’s first bachelor’s degrees. With limited career opportunities for women, she began searching for ways to help others and solve the country’s growing social problems. In 1888, Addams and her college friend, Ellen Gates Starr, visited Toynbee Hall, the two women observed college-educated Englishmen “settling” in desperately poor East London slum where they helped the people. This gave her the idea for Hull House.
Another fabulous historical attraction is the Longwood Plantation in Natchez. Featuring Greek Revival architecture, this plantation home lets visitors get a look at how Mississippi's upper classes lived during the late 1700s and into the 1800s. Built with an octagonal design, this home is said by many to be one of the most impressive historic houses in the world. Surviving intact since 1861, this home truly is one of Mississippi's finest historical treasures.
A new phenomenon happening in our city is the rebirth of many of our older and rundown areas. One of the best examples of this is the "Soulard" area of town, which now has an established nightlife as well as exquisite historical antique homes. Lafayette Square has also enjoyed the same type of success as Soulard. It is still in the middle of a high crime area, but is populated by upper-class people with beautiful homes with elaborate wrought iron fences and intricate security systems. This trend of fixing up old flats is spreading out from the areas of Soulard and Lafayette Square to neighboring communities at a rapid pace. The Compton Heights area is coming back with rebuilt old Victorian styled houses and private gated streets that contrast the French styled flats of Soulard. The Shaw and Tower Grove area are also following the lead of revitalization similar to these charming old neighborhoods.
