East End District has been around long enough to be deemed a historical aspect of the Houston area. With age of the area playing a factor in the various strengths and weaknesses of the area become apparent. The opportunities and issues that are present today are in existence because of the changing economic and social climate of the East End. Strengths The strengths within the Greater East End District are derived from the business aspect, education and job aspect, structure of the area, and the actual quality of the area. The first important strength of this area is the close proximity of being adjacent to downtown Houston. One of these weaknesses is the stigma that is associated with the East End area of Houston. Although once explored into greater detail and the strengths are found the area can be seen as a place for growth and opportunity. Unfortunately, upon initial name recognition instant judgements are made about the community which result in the hesitation of potential entrepreneurial investors. With such hesitation, the expansion of businesses in the community is slow-moving and therefore creates a slow increase, if any, of commerce in the area. Ironically, the East End District is located closely to major centers of higher education, however a weakness that is prevalent within the community is the low levels of education for the residents of the area. This in turn creates a difficulty in finding people that have the training necessary to be a desirable employee. It limits the areas of skill and labor in which the residents of the community can be hired into. Another weakness in this community is the high amount of residents whom do not speak English. This creates a language and cultural barrier further dividing the residents of the East End community and not allowing for a community that can come together as a whole. Another disadvantage the East End community has is the actual age of the area. Historically speaking the community has deep roots and is established, however much of the area is weathered and aged and this effects the roadways, water and drainage systems of the areas. With these highly important systems that need to function correctly it effects the businesses as well as the residents of the community.
